Default A-spec suspension. Where to go from here.

I just got through reading the one thread about a-spec suspension, and the ep3/dc5 suspension tuning thread, but they are a bit vague. My question is, what do I do with my suspension now. Currently it has a-spec suspension, stock wheels, and dunlop direzza dz101's. I plan on having the a good alignment done soon. I am wondering what mods you guys recommend to tune it further. It handles pretty well right now, albeit still a bit much understeer. Should I go with a larger rear sway like progress? Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Better tires. Rear sway could help as well, but I think the tires would be a better mod to get first. If need be, I would do the sway after. Check out some Kumho XS' or Dunlop Star Specs.

Ditch the stock wheels for something lighter.

Yeah man, go with bigger wheels so you can get wider better tires. I had those DZ101s and they were OK for street driving but I wore them out really quick and after my first AUTOX with them they were gone. Now I upgraded to 17s so I am running 215s and even with Sumitomo HTR+ all season tires it sticks WAY better.

Also the sway bar makes a huge difference too.

Just to comment on this... having wider tires doesn't always mean better handling!

If car A has 225-45-17 Yokohama Sdrives and car B has 195-55-15 Falken Azenis, car B would have better handling any day of the week!

So really what matters before tire size is the compound you are going to use. What I would do is decided on a good tire that fits your needs and then i would go wider!

Partially disagree with this example... stiffer sidewalls matter too, not just stickier tread compound.

Carry on gents

I do agree that obviously a stickier, narrower tire could easily have better grip than a wider crappy tire.

I was just saying that if it does come down to it I didn't have to run super crazy expensive 195 or 205 tires and can settle for a little bit a cheaper, milder 215 or 225.

I am actually thinking about going with a 22mm progress rear sway. To bad I was trying to show out for some chicks and spent a buttload of cash eating out this weekend. No sway for a while.

not a fan...imo, the progress rear bar is missing 2 bends so they tend to bang on your cat back.....I vote hotchkis camber plates and replacing the lca bushings after good wheels and tires...think about a cusco 25mm rear sway.

What will the camber plates do for me? Allow more negative camber?

they will give you 1.9 degrees of neg camber.....since the ep3 has almost no caster, you take all the camber you can get. The car will feel much more set in the turns after the tires bed in.

This is for a DC5. I am guessing they have the same issue as the EP3. What I really want to be able to do is invoke oversteer. At the moment I am still getting far to much understeer, but if I could get it to snap the rear out, it might be less of an issue.

More details are needed:

1) What wheels are you running? 16" OEM or 17" A-spec wheels

2) Do you autox/HPDE the car, or is it a street car only?

3) You DO NOT want snap over-steer on a street car. You also DO NOT want lift-throttle oversteer on a street car.

Basically, get good tires and a JDM DC5R rear swaybar.

If you want to fuss with camber bolts in the front, have someone install them who knows what they are doing and how to adjust and properly tighten them for max negative camber.

That's all you need. Don't go messing with your car too much if you don't know what'll happen--especially if it is a street car.
