Default what spark plugs???

OK so i have been researching the ins and outs of my motor and build i am doing and now have one of the last things to consider. what spark plugs to run? Im going to run NGK iridiums more then likely, its the heat level im unsure of. Im building a "poormans R" that will have 11.5:1CR.

I looked up GSR plugs and they run heat level 6. looked up ITR and the run a bit colder at heat level 7. I was under the understanding higher compression needed a hotter spark, or am i wrong? I always ran BKE7R's in my boosted LSV, but i ran colder because it was boosted and they were gapped differently. Looking for an educated answer, im in for learning a bit more on this.

I am pretty sure heat level 5 is too hot and would pre-detonate and possibly cause melting. Level 5 is hot, Level six is considered "medium heat" and 7's are cold. I have been searching an educating myself, but i would like more input as well.

Thanks HT

I'm in the same situation. I am running a GSR long block with ITR internals, from what I can tell with the ITR pistons and GSR head I should be a little under 11.5 compression. I actually called NGK and asked which heat range to use and he said to use BKR7E-11. If you look up the '97/'98 Type R it recommends a heat level 6 though. He couldn't answer my question about the difference in years. Anyway, I guess you could run either a 6 or 7 heat range but he recommended the 7's. That's what I'm trying to find in town now. Going with the NGK V-Power BKR7e-11 for now and see how it goes.

I'm also waiting on a more educated response though.

The NGK rep did say that level 7 heat range should be good to about 12:1 compression. Don't know if that helps, but that's the info NGK gave me. I know the USDM ITR only has like 10.6:1 compression, so I was worried about going to 11.5 on the same heat range and he said no need to go colder then 7.

The heat range has nothing to do with how hot the spark is.

BKR7EIX-11 is the proper plug for you if your want run an NGK Iridium IX Plug.
BKR7E-11 is what you want to run if you get copper plugs.
BKR7E has a gap that is more appropriate for FI applications. BKR7E-11 and BKR7EIX-11 have the factory gap specs, so its good for N/A.

We stock all these plugs if you need a place to buy them

V-Power ARE resistor type plugs, or so the NGK web site and the box of plugs says. Got my BKR7E-11 plugs today, fresh tune-up in the works now. Thanks for all the input on this.

In my B18C-R I used BKR6EIX-11 because thats what autozone looked up for the Type R. However thats the USDM and I have the JDM. It ran great but I also have the NGKR 7 heat range IDK the number they came in the motor. Yeah I replaced those for the 6 heat range lol When I took them out they were all shiny black so I figured they were too cold. Maybe the motor just needed to be ran for a bit IDK. Once I get it back in my car with the 6's since I know those worked I'll put the 7's in and then pull them to see what they look like. Then I'll decide which would be better to run. If I get it tuned I'll probably put the 7's in because if timing is advanced more heat is created and it would be better suited.
