Question for Chicago Type R owners
I might end up taking a job in Chicago, nothing definate yet, but was wondering how safe is the city for a R? I would want to live downtown, so are the garages safe or am I looking at selling my baby?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Don't know too much, but I lived in lincoln park (about 2 miles north of downtown/loop approx) for about a year with my R being parked behind the building I lived in, outside, right near the alley. Pretty secluded, and I never had a problem at all. I wouldn't be parking on the streets in any city, but if you have a garage spot you should be fine. Of course it depends on the area, too. I'm sure someone has more specific info.

Chicago's a good place. We get a lot of Ricer's and what not but i am pretty confident that our R's will be safe. God knows that if those thieves want something bad enough, they will go through the lengths to get it. Let me know when you get down. We can all hookup and give you a lil tour around the city.

BTW, in Chicago there are lots of places you can live in the city and call it "downtown". Basically, there are lots of nice/decent/trendy neighborhoods with high-rises and lots of shops and restaurants, along virtually the entire (30? mile) length of the lakefront. You could call any of them "downtown" if you wanted. Some are very expensive, others less so. Away from the lake, there is a wide variety of neighborhoods, some upscale, some not nice at all, and everything in between, but without as high a concentration of people/nightlife/shopping/etc you find along the lake (and it sounds like what you're looking for).
There are also a few suburbs (Evanston, Oak Park) that have a lot of nightlife and young people and a "downtown" feel to them - don't rule that out either.

yea, and if you live IN chicago. A car isnt really needed. The L train ownz.
So, you can keep in it the garage and barely really need it. Night trips down Lakeshore Drive will become your friend too.

I still feel Chicagoland is pretty safe for ITRs, even though my experience contradicts this!
Count your blessings...
Considering that I live 2 blocks away from the dealer, and that the car was out of my hands for less than a week, I still consider it my experience. I was pretty upset about it all for about a week after I heard.
I posted a thread similar to this last May. There were quite a few replies stating that a good number of ITRs have been stolen in Chicagoland. No, it isnt like Cali, Toronto, or NYC, but don't consider this area theft-free either.

No one said it's theft-free here. But an ITR should be reasonably safe here, as safe as in most metro areas, and safer, in general, then many. Particularly if reasonable precautions are taken by locking the car and keeping it in a garage, which were not the circumstances of yours when it was stolen from the dealership.
Also, keep in mind that, with eight million people here and a goodly number of ITRs, there are going to be a few thefts reported here, more than in smaller cities just due to sheer numbers. That does not mean that there is a disproportionate amount of theft here; if anything, I think it is safer than many other places. But - as many of us have said - that does not represent a guarantee; things happen everywhere, including here.
The fact remains, the vast majority of us here have not had any problems with the safety of our ITR. Move here and get together with us and enjoy the Chicago ITR scene.
P.S. rs - don't leave your car unattended, with the keys in the glove compartment
, overnight, in an outdoor area with lots of visibility from passing traffic. Don't do this in Chicago, and don't do this anywhere else.

rs, you will be safe here with the R, as long as you use common sense in where you leave it. you won't have to treat it differently from how you would treat any other car. just take all the usual precautions you would take with any other car (or other property of value) and you will be fine.
mine was parked (without an alarm!) in an apartment complex parking lot in a suburb for about a year. all I lost were the emblems. at that time I lived very close to SpeedSport and I am sure one of the moronic riceboys who hang out at the store ripped off the emblems
Around that time Wai also lost his emblems.
Did any of you guys watch NBC5 news last night? There was a report about cops catching several car theives on tape. I didn't see nuch of it but the little I saw showed the theives stealing GM products from the early 90s!
PS - if you need a set of winter wheels for your snow/winter tires, I have wheels for sale. IM me for more info.
