Default Type R running too rich (already searched)

Hi I recently purchased a 2001 Type R 141,000km I am the second owner the first owner serviced it at the dealer.

The car is bone stock never been mod'd
I have a large depoist of black soot/carbon build up on the rear bumper, and bad gas mileage.
I have changed the following to try and fix the problem, the car has no cel codes and the scanner brings up nothing.
MAP, IAT, EGT, O2 in front of the cat, Injectors and fuel rail, thermostat.

Compression test said 210 on all four.

Something is telling the ECU to ineject too much fuel, but I'm lost as to what it is. My wife drives the car to and from work aprox 110km per day the car uses about half a quart of oil a week. My wife does not drive the car hard.

I have read almost all the threads on this problem but cannot find the answer.

Please help, I have some ideas, but these are just ideas
o2 behind the cat?
cat?
Fuel filter?

get your short and long term fuel trims while driving on a scan tool. if the long term is more than -7.0 you're indeed rich. black soot could also be oil burning with the fuel. how much oil are you going through? without fuel trim {or a wideband} data it's basically guessing. you can pull fuel trims with the rental at autozone or buy something like an

I'll try that with the scan tool, This is the strange thing, the plugs in the car tell the perfect story of the perfect mixture. The car burns half a quart of oil every 2 weeks or every 1100km.

that's typical on the oil burning. if you blast vtec all the time small amounts of black are common due to the rich mixture at WOT, the overlap of the cams and the oil entering the chamber. honda more or less tunes the cars safe for a few reasons, the engine has to be able to run on 87 octane and get hammered on. run in 110 deg weather and also get hammered and survive bad gas. you can run a custom ecu and really dial the AF and timing to premium gas but the few hp and extra mpg are at the expense of safety if you run 87 ever or get bad gas and blast it

Any updates on this? My car has the exact same problem. I suspect it might even be oil on the bumper, maybe the oil is leaking through the valve seals.

It's my understanding that Honda spec'd the B18C/5 to allow larger amounts of oil to seep by the oil control ring to allow for greater lubrication due to the engine's higher redline. Also, as stated above Honda tuned the ecu for safety. I was having the same problem with my itr and installed a Comptech Icebox intake/ K&N filter and that helped ALOT as far as how rich it was running. The cooler the air the more you can cram inside the combustion chambers therefore slightly leaning the air/fuel mixture out.

If you want to completly fix the issue you are going to have to get a tune. It's old technology we are working with on our ITR's and this was the best way for Honda to go about it back in the day.

You might want to consider sending your injectors to RC Engineering and have them serviced. They will ensure that all 4 injectors are operating within a close % of each other.

Assuming you don't have a mechanical issue you can try an adjustable regulator and turn down the fuel pressure a couple of lbs, or the ideal would be Hondata.

In general the factory ECU tends to run a bit rich at WOT.

fuel injection connection does the same thing as RC for less. $15 an injector

http://fuelinjectorconnection.com/shop/

ive personally used them and the turn around is FAST, like 1 day fast

do a leakdown test, probably losing oil thru the valves.

He has a bone stock motor thats been serviced at the dealership its whole life. I highly doubt he needs a rebuild. You guys are listing off all these potential things when its prob running just like every other stock ITR. Rich as hell.

Let's start here:

OP- what's your gas milage like? And under what kind of driving conditions?

FYI- every stock ecu ITR will turn it's back bumper black from the factory

My roommates ITR did the same thing after about 115k Miles.....I rebuilt it with brand new valve seals and piston rings, along with all the other good stuff,to factory spec. That fixed the black soot and burning oil and it gets 30MPGs now.
