Default I need to know if this is normal.

I have an LS hydro tranny that I am currently trying to diagnose the problem in. I mounted it to the block without checking the gears, and when I tried to get it into gear, it would catch 1st and 2nd, 5th and reverse, but no 3rd and 4th. I removed the tranny and separated the casing only to find that everything "looked' normal. I kind of moved things as much as I could with my hands to see if anything was broken, that I couldn't see by just looking at it. When I did the middle shift fork felt a little looser than the other two. Also the shifter assembly felt a little sloppy. Then when I tried to get it into gear with it separated, it went into 3rd and 4th gear. So..... my questions are:

1. Is there a way that the shifter assembly can get bound up, but then be relieved by wiggling it around a bit? Will it get bound up again if I continue to use it the way it is?

2. How much "slop" should be in a Honda tranny, but still in decent condition?

3. Is there a way that it could have been opened and put back together wrongly enough to bind the shifter up.

If you have any opinions on what else could be the culprit, let me know. Also, if you do have any ideas, let me know about the solution. Any further questions I will answer as soon as I see them. Thanks.

They look pretty straight. How can I tell, for sure, that they are straight or not?

No helpful insight huh? C'mon, there has to be someone that knows, or has had the same issue. How'd you fix it?

Well 3/4 are on the same shift fork but also share other parts such as the sleeve. My transmission has been giving me problems too since yesterday where it would only go into 2nd or 5th but now will go in 1-3. I've had the problem before and it was my shift change assembly.

How does the sleeve look and have you taken the mainshaft apart? Sometimes if all of the components are still a little bit loose and have play from not being compressed down, it'll give you troubles.

Have you ever used the transmssion before?

The shift change assembly looks to be in good condition. I have not taken the tranny apart that far before. I bought the tranny used, and the guy said it was in great condition.
