Default Temp problem? Burnt plasic smell! Help?!?!

Need some help from someone with mechanic experteeze. It's a 2001 accord... Recently when I've been driving I've been smelling like a melted plastic smell. It started maybe 2-3 weeks ago. I figured I ran over a plastic bag or some **** and it got caught on the exhaust etc. Well the smell has died down but when I park and get out I still smell it vaguely. Now in the last 2-3 days I've noticed when i'm city driving the temperature stays where it's supposed to, but when I get on a highway the gauge dips down below the cold line. The heat still comes out hot but if I want to adjust it to come out a nice room temp feel, it comes out with a little chill, not cold but not warm. Any suggestions to what the problem could be?

Ps.. I know I should just pop the hood to take a look if I see anything out of the ordinary, but long story short the car was hit by a tractor trailor on the turnpike early last year so it's not the easiest hood to open n close. Don't really want to open it unless there is no choice.

I had a problem like that not in a Honda but a old mk3 supra. It was the red rubber part that went over the battery positive. When I searched it other cars from Toyota that year had the same problem, so I just cut off the rubber part and it was fine from there. It could be the same problem, but wait around for another person to answer who has more knowledge than me. Also if you go to the autozone website it has a part for diagnosing smells and sounds it could help link you to your problem, go to the repair link on there website, I have used them before for other cars it works okay.

No it did not effect my heat, as for the heat feel the hoses near your heater core and see if they are hot your heater core might be clogging up, and at the heater core for the bypass unit it might be stuck or not working correctly from the wreck.
