Default I think I may be detonating help me trouble shoot

Okay all this time ive been thinking I need my vavles adjusted...well maybe its just me but they seem really loud....now Ive never heard a car detonate so I cant clearly make a decision....my valves sound like a typewriter straight up seriously..and when I start out and start to drive they get worse......its only coming from like 1 or 2 cylinders

Okay Im going to do a compression test........just to see....
Do the radiator check with the bubbling.....
and check the plugs.....

Now Im going to throw in some octane boost and retard my timing 2 degrees......do you think this could stop the valves from tapping so hard...and I wont detonate?? If I even am??

BTW...MY o2 sensor is blown...gettin a new one today....as well as a new radiator cap and thermostat...becuase I keep overheating after a while...but I just changed the headgasket with brand new headbolts and gasket from honda...only thing I could think of is the head isnt completely torqued down to spec cause my wrench sux......

If your valves are out of adjustment, octane boost or retarding the timing will have no effect on their noise. Adjust them while the engine is cold.

Are you losing coolant and/or getting bubling in it? That could indicate a leaking head gasket. The new t-stat and cap should help with the overheating if the head gasket is OK, as well as the radiator and water pump.

I hope the head didn't warp. If you severely overheated it when the old gasket failed, it could be the reason the new one isn't holding, if that's what you eventually determine.

No I had my head milled and resurfaced........cleans my block and pistons to a T...and used the thicker then stock headgasket from honda......

Its not blowing ANY WHITE SMOKE OR WATER.....I do burn oil.....Yes I said id check to see the bubbling....but I think its my T-stat...and prob. the radiator cap it is pretty banged up.....

NOthing is leaking outta the head....and it runs strong....still gotta do a compression test.....

Im saying though.....maybe my valves arent outta adjustment.....the noise im hearing could be detonation....so I retard the timing and up the octane to compensate for running leant hat should help?? right?

Are you hearing it under idle or while at WOT? I don't think you can detonate while idling sinse your car won't be pulling hardly any air in.

Well Ive been driving it all day my car hasnt over heated but i bought a T-stat just for the sake of it......and a new radiator cap....put that on....and it seems to be fine..

neither my resoirvoir or my radiator is bubbling but I still am going to have honda or if I get arorund to it and get a good torque wrench make sure my head is torqed to spec.....

Ive come to the conclusion its just my valves....I had my head resurfaced and cleaned.......would that make the valves get outta whach a lil???

OH and if my valves are improperly tuned cant this lead to burning oil a lil more then usual..I always used to burn oil (bad oil rings-good compression) but now its a lil worse then before???

I'm having the same tapping on my freshly cleaned z6 head. I'm going to bet that after the cleaning you didnt adjust the valves, neither did I. I'm doing just that this weekend, should remove the tap dance from under the valve cover....

Thats all I think mine is too..the machine shop cleaned the hell outta my head and Ill give them props...but its gotten a lil quiter its not as bad and Its def. the vavles...

Hey im still having problems with overheating after about half an hour of driving...what do you think T-stat? Ive got one from my friends si.....but I might buy a new on its only 14 bucks......and a new radiator cap as well....

My coolant isnt going down..im not burning any coolant and im not getting any bubbly...I really dont want it to be the water pump cause I dont want to have to take the head off again.....

detonation is heard by a ping or a knock, also felt by hesitation. what are you doing that makes you think your detonating?

valve noise is from improperly adjusted valves their prolly seated too low and claping on your pistons. also since you milled the head the cam to crank didsance is off. to compensate you need an adjustable cam gear and advance 1* for every .35 ( *think*) mm taken off the head. lemmie double chweck that nunber.

if your over heating get a new thurmo lower degrees are better but not in winter b/c it take fordamn near ever to get any heat in the cabin.

since your o2 sensor is shot your computer wll fail safe the car. it'll dump fuel in. a richer mixure is a cooler one which helps to prevent detonation.
