Default Just bought a CRX, tell me what you think

I have wanted a CRX since high school, but got serious into looking for one a couple months ago. Found this one on Craigs List, paid 1500 for it. Has the stock D15B2 engine, which I am researching right now, looking for performance enhancements (any tips are appreciated). Also has a new dizzy, plugs, rotor. I have been a long time car audio installer/competitor, and these cars get loud as hell. My son is now old enough to like competing in SPL, so we are going to do quite a bit of that this year. Anyway, some pictures:

The only thing that mildly concerns me happened today. I changed the oil, and used a tad under a quart of Lucas stabilizer in it. When I got on it pretty heavy at lunch, I noticed some blue smoking out of the exhaust. Went to autozone and picked up a PCV valve, changed it out (the old one looked BAD BAD) and it has stopped smoking at high rpms, so I hope that recitified the issue.

Yes, it is pearl, with ghost flames across the hood lol. The driver's side door was primed out. I sprayed it with ppg bc/cc this past weekend. Here are some pics:

Pretty clean!
I wanted a Rex, but I needed a back seat. Yeah the D15B2 is DPFI, not much you can do performance wise without switching to MPFI. If you can find the parts cheap and don't mind a little wiring you could do something with this engine, but it's really not worth throwing money at IMHO. Drive it till the motor dies, then drop in B-series
OR
Sell the motor now to someone who just blew theirs, and drop in a B-series.

OK I will consider that, thanks. One thing I am reading is that the D15 is an interference-type engine, and I do not know the engine's history, so I think I will tackle replacing the timing belt this weekend.
Is that a job I can do in the front yard, or is it difficult? The only experience I have with timing belts on 4 cylinders is the ford escort, and it is a biatch...
Anyone have a link to a good walk-thru by chance?

Thanks again for all of the comments!

Ya know you probably could do it in a driveway, but its so much easier with the car on a lift. I don't have a walk-through I trust, but honestly a buddy who knows what he's doing is 1,000 times better then some print out!

OK, I am a little confused..
Is there an FAQ that will tell me exactly what engines are direct swaps with my D15B2? I have read some of the FAQs on the forum, I don't understand what a mini-me is, or a Z6. Is the B-series engine a direct swap, or I thought I read that a lot had to be changed out, like the mounts, tranny, ecu, etc. LOL sorry for all the noob-ness, just excited about all of the info...
Thanks again

mini me's are a head swap. all these swaps require you to wire it to MPFI, which is easy. i'd say grab a new head or carb it. if you get confused on the FAQ, google stuff. HT gets confusing at times. Good luck!

Thanks for all the input, guys! It will take me a few days to sift thru the info on the various sites, including that link. I assume my 91 DX is also an EF, although I do not know what it stands for

for the swap questions, go to auto zone and pick up the "Honda Swaps" manual. its by all the other chilton/haynes automotive manuals. Pretty much any D series(i.e. D15b2, D16y8, D16a6, and so on, look it up on wikipedia for all the d series motors) will be a relatively easy swap. you can use the same tranny, axles, and mounts since its all in the D family. You will however need to swap ecu's and may need to do some wiring. B series swaps are a whole other level. You DO need to swap EVERYTHING, engine, tranny, axles, ecu, custom motor and tranny mounts, and all that fun stuff. like stated above, a mini-me swap is a head swap, basically you just putting a Vtec head on your non-vtec block. For that you also need to do wiring of the vtec solenoid.

I know its a lot, but hell i just turned 17 and learned all that **** myself lol.

its just 2 letters to differentiate the years the cars were made. get over yourself about the ef/ed bullshit its just a model to call our cars in general.

op
EF/ED/EE 88-91 civic
EG/EH 92-95 civic
EJ/EK 96-00 civic

there are SEVERAL variations for these codes and usually followed by a number (found on your vin plate)

for example. i have a 1989 civic DX, so i have a ED6.
a JDM RHD SIR would be labeled EF9

the USA got the ED (hatch) EE (crxs) dono what the sedans are sorry guys.

As for your question about the b-series being a direct swap, no it is not. You need to change everything. Mounts/Linkage/ECU/Engine/modify the front crossmember/different engine brackets/custom wiring.

the problem is no mater what motor you put in youll need to convert from the DPFI you have to a MPFI. Its simple and im sure youll read the how to's on what you need to change. But this MPFI conversion HAS to be done for any 88-91 SI motor or 92-00 motor of any kind to work at all.

Car looks alright shape as a project. I'd say you paid a bit heavy for it. The last three crx Si models i bought were all under $1000. I bought this one for $400

x2!!

hahah why does everyone have to get so technical about everything!?
everybody gets what they are trying to say and if you dont.. click the thread and read and find out what kind of motor the "ef" has just cuz its bought in the US and isn right hand drive doesnt mean that its not swapped..

besides why you coming in and infecting some other dudes thread asking simple questions about some preformance mods and nit picking on someone else trying to give them a simple answer?

im on vw forums for my 65 bug too and they have an "official whine about" thread someone start one for ht so all the bickering can happen in one place and people that have simple honest questions can get quick honest answers
without 3 pages of bs

ed4_civic hes obviously new to the whole honda scene cut him a break he is learning we were all there once

im definately not new to the honda scene..... All im saying is when it all gets mashed together itll be just like the whole jdm thing where every part you buy for your car is somehow jdm, you ask why everyone has to be so technical? www.honda-TECH.com, it needs to be as technical as possible, this isnt a chill and be cool, lets all hug each other buddy buddy forum its a tech resource fourm, im entitled to my opinion and my post didnt violate the rules so, its free speech man we dont have to agree, but you dont got to make it personal i disagreed with the mans opinion not the man himself, funny thing is you done the exact same thing your bitching at me about and adding nothing to the OP question everyone on here is here to learn. i dont think i was being hard on anyone......
