Default 89 D16A Help

I currently have an 89 Civic EF with a JDM ZC SOHC/D16A swap in it, the speedometer stopped working a week ago so I took it to the shop to have it fixed. The gear that they fixed didn't work and they said that it's the gear inside the tranny that is also broken and I have a slight leak. I was wondering if the ECU that is in it now will work if I buy a JDM ZC DOHC and tranny to swap in. I'm not sure what ecu is in it at the moment seeing that I bought the car as is. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

which do you have? there is a SOHC ZC and a SOHC D16A? try swapping out the speed sensor. what did the shop do to try and fix it before they told you the gear inside was bad. most common thing is that the speedometer cable comes loose. try looking at those items. and jack up the car (front of course on some jackstands as well) have someone sit inside and have them push on the gas pedal. next push down on the cable and have the other person tell you if the speedometer starts to work. it could also be that the gauge itself is bad. if you have a spare one, swap them out and see what happens.

Well it's the JDM ZC engine, but I doubt it's the cable because as the car slows down there is a slight whining, the shop replaced gear for the speedometer but said the one in the tranny itself is broken as well. As for the engine, do you know if the ECU will work with the DOHC ZC?

i know here in the US you can use a PG7 which is the ecu out of am 86-89 integra i believe. it has the D16A1 (dohc d-series). as for the whining it leads me to believe you just need a new cable. try the cheaper stuff first to fix it. then when all else fails swap out the transmission and your good.

Thank you for the advice, now as for the tranny, there is a seal that is leaking, not as bad as it was because they replaced it but they said that it had been leaking for so long that it always will have a very slow leak now. The question I have now is, what tranny will work with the SOHC ZC I have? Will the DOHC ZC or the D16A tranny work?

Any D-series trans will work. Cheapest route will be the DX 5 speed trans.

Well come to find you, I took the tire off and looked at the tranny myself, it's missing about half of the bearings where the shaft goes in which has caused it to wobble around wiile I drive, the seal that the shop replaced is almost bad again so now I'm on the hunt for a D series transmission.... thanks for the info though guys
