Default vtec or no vtec

i have a LS motor, no vtec that im gonna be boosting soon. ive heard some people say vtec doesnt increase hp gains by alot because of something with the cams lobes being closed at lower rpms and open at higher ones, but if there was no vtec, the lobes would stay open resulting in a greater constant hp gain..

im just trying to get some insight and info to see if i should get a vtec kit or not. im new to the honda game and just trying to get the most out of my car.

Thanks, Let me know whats better.

Idk who said vtec doesn't increase hp by alot, I have a usdm type r and without vtec it runs at 103 hp and when vtec hits it increase 60+hp to the wheels that is.

It depends. How much work are you willing to put in, and how will the car be used?

You can get a lot of power from aftermarket non-vtec camshafts, but if you're daily driving the car, it might be a pain in the ***. VTEC just widens the powerband (in essence).

the car isnt gonna be daily driven. its gonna be fully built. im going all out and money isnt an issue. thats why im doing research before i start the build so i can get as much power as possible. i already have a 95 hatch gutted, and everything else is done except the motor work.

well the two different lobes are the whole point of vtec. without it the car would run like crap at part throttle and get **** gas mileage.

the problems with building a straight ls motor:

the head, even ported, still does not flow as well as a stock vtec head.
the valves are smaller
the rockers are unstable at high rpm.

You want Vtec.

It's been stated a few times in here already that High-Rev stability of all motor LS's leaves alot to be desired, and you can't beat the engine management and Power Efficiency of the system as well as the components, their designed and optimal for the conditions that you're preparing to throw this car in. I don't know who would tell you that ON SPOT Advancement, Cam Aggression, Increased Fuel/Air delivery and superior flow and rev capacity would tell you the gains aren't HIGH but they're sadly mistaken.
