6th gen transmission issues
Hi, I've heard a lot of people telling me to not buy a 1998-2002 accord due to automatic transmission issues. Do all of them crap or was it certain models? I like these cars and could prob get one way cheaper than a 7th gen but I do not want to buy a headache.
Anyone know the lowdown on this issue, I know there is pending litigation/petition against Honda. So its obviously a big deal.

It's a pretty big deal. The V6's are no good. The tranny will crap out on you for sure. The 4 cyls Auto's are also bad, but not as bad as the V6's. The 5 speeds have no problems.
have a freind with a 01 4 cyl 190k miles no issues with automatic, not all bad many repalced, i heard they had a faulty vendor making parts, but not all units were affected, i have a 01 with the 6 cyl and its fine with 130 k

Ask to see there service records. See if they have kept up on the maintenance on the transmission. If not there is a better chance there will be a problem.
do we know of any other major problems that would keep me from snagging a 6th gen or are they pretty much solid save for the tranny issue?
The autos are crap in those cars, there are multiple reasons for failure
1. weak differential bearings
2. no user serviceable filter
3. 2nd gear clutch pack low lubrication to begin with
I had a 98 Accord LX V6 and that thing ate 4 transmissions within 11K miles. Car sold at 100K
I have a 2002 CL-S and it is on it's second transmission. Car has 90K

I saw a sedan 5spd and would like to jump on it, but is there a way to tell if that model of auto wasn't affected? Like I'm sure they all shift fine when you're test driving it, but i wouldnt be surprised if 10k later it starts to crap out on you.
Is there a way to tell if it will be ok, by year or VIN? I wanna get away from stick but If i have to I'll get another 5spd

i just pulled my 6th gen F23A1 engine and 5speed tranny for a swap to F20B and T2T4 anyway mine has 240xxx and still running strong when i pulled it this past Saturday it is now F/S
so the 5 spds were not affected at all? Also, if the transmission was replaced, does that mean it was not another defective one and it is good to go?

My Accord is a 98 and has been a typical Honda: Solid
You can trust it to make it from point A to B anytime, anywhere. Its had very few problems and currently has 219,XXX on the odometer.
yes, automatic transmission are complete garbage....i've had mine for 3 years and been through 2 already...but i did a 5 speed conversion because i couldn't take it anymore and on top of that i wanted to go boost in the future. but from my experience, either get a 5 speed or if u gonna get the automatic, make sure u baby it...
