Mismatching Keys
Hey guys. I'm sure I am not the only one that would like to know how to solve this problem.
I bought a car that has been broken into. The ignition has been replaced, so now it takes a different key than the original. Basically, I have a separate key to start the car, and another key to unlock the doors/trunk. Has anyone ever had their ignition configured to accomodate the original key? Or do you have to replace every single key cylinder?

You can swap the key cylinder in the ignition. You have to take that plastic cover off the column, put the key in and rotate to accessory, push a little pin in using a small screwdriver or something (it will be a bronze color, hard to miss) and then you can pull the lock cylinder out. It will come out most of the way, and then you need a flathead screwdriver to lift this little lever part up that's inside where the cylinder is.
From there you can get a new cylinder or rekey your old one.
I should do a write up on this, but I threw away the busted ignition part from my car... Someone must have tried to steal mine at one time and I switched the whole column

Nice. Yeah, you defiinitely should do that writeup. I can picture it in my head though, so I'll probably take a stab at it on my extra steering column. I'm confused on what you mean by "rekey" my old key cylinder. Are you saying I could make it work with my original key? I don't need my old ignition to swap the key cylinder from? Cause I don't have that haha. Thanks for the reply

that woulda helped me out alot with my old hatch. lol
You can go to the dealership and get pin kits including all necessary springs and staking hardware to re-key your cylinder. I think I have a few of these kits in my tool box somewhere for the 92+ civic/integra/accord pre series 4 anti theft and I also know I have a kit for a S2K. (I used to work for Honda)

Yeah, next time I go up to the machine shop, I will look for them. The dealership should know exactly what part number it is though. I am 100% positive that you aren't the first person needing a lock pin kit.

So thats why I have to use 2 keys on my Sol!!! Just bought it two weeks ago, has a swapped JDM B16A in my VTEC Del Sol (which comes with DOHC B16A2 to begin with). Has a rebuilt title due to theft from before the guy who I bought it from. B16A2 musta been stolen, B16A swapped in, and ignition changed??
I wouldn't mind a write up to remedy this annoyance

I don't have an extra column anymore, I installed it and threw away my junk one apparently.
In this link and the picture on the right is generally what the switch is going to look like. Ours don't have the screw at the bottom.

Now, notice the "pin". If you put the key in the ignition, rotate it to "accessory", you can push the pin down. It was either the first or second position past off, but just gently push it down as you turn the key. When it goes down, pull the key and the cylinder will come out, but not all the way. Notice the little groove on that rectangular hump. In there is an arm that you need to lift up and a flathead screwdriver, even a pen will work fine to raise it. Now the cylinder will come out all the way and you can switch them.

If you want to change just the tumbler, you can take off that shiny silver cover where the key goes in and the tumbler will come out of the cylinder and from there you can rekey it or get a different one, or just pull all the pins out and be able to start the car with a screwdriver.
I just explained as well as i can short of going and taking pictures of my car's ignition, and it's currently around 0*F outside. I'm willing to help, just not at the cost of freezing my butt off.
why not go to a copart (triple nickle) and buy a complete key/lock set? i know they sell them off of demolished cars. just change the doors, trunk, and ignition all at once. sure would beat having 3 or 4 different keys. just and idea...

this thread is helpful if you can match the numbers off your ignition with your door/trunk locks and switch out the lock plates
