Default Car never warms up

Basically, in a nutshell, my car never gets warm in the winter because of the cold air hitting the engine. Is there any tips so that I can limit any cooling to the engine so it will reach the proper temp for the winter?

Works fine in the summer and all. Its just that the air is so cold in NJ, especially when driving 70 mph in 5th gear with an ls trans, that the engine isnt generating enough heat. Ive heard of putting something in between the radiator and front of the car to block cold air from getting through. I dont know any other ways though.

Don't redline it but take the RPMs a little higher, if that doesn't help block off a section of the radiator.

I actually just dealt with this same problem today in my CRX. I put two pieces of cardboard in front of the radiator, but left about a 3 or 4 inch strip uncovered down the middle. It hasn't reached normal operating temperature since I swapped my B18 in (unless I let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes). I'm checking my thermostat once it gets a little warmer or I get into a garage. I believe that may be the problem.

I think your thermostat is stuck open. This happened to me with my del sol engine that i put into my sedan. In the del sol it never warmed up, and in the sedan it never warmed up. I then swapped in an LS motor and the heat worked GREAT. LOL my friend told me that the only reason i was swapping engines was for my heat to work lmfao!

or maybe it doesnt have a thermostat at all. my friend with a b16 integra never had one in his because he said the ECU thinks the engine is cold all the time (which it is) therefore it adds more fuel to the engine to warm it up but it never warms up. Cheap power, lol

check the single wire temp sensor below the distributor. i know a long time ago on my old z6 hb the temp needle would only rise intermittently until i looked at it and realized the connector was loose not making good contact all the time.

What will covering the radiator do?

If the car is registering as cold, the thermostat will not open. If the thermostat doesn't open (which means coolant temperatures are under ~80*C), no coolant is getting drawn in from the radiator. You can cover the radiator until the cows come home, it's not going to make a difference.

Your thermostat is probably stuck open allowing coolant to constantly be pushed through the radiator and into the engine.

One of two things is happening here.

1. You just DON'T have a thermostat
2. Your thermostat is stuck open.

Go to your local Honda dealership and get a thermostat. I believe its $27.13 after tax. Don't go to Autozone, napa, Schucks and buy one of their garbage *** thermostats. While your there, buy some Honda antifreeze. You'll thank me later for what Honda antifreeze will do for your car later.

Edit: Give me the year/make/engine code or size and I'll give you a part number for the thermostat.

Edit: Here's the part number if you have a D15, not entirelry sure if it'll work for other d-series motors or not.

I would have to disagree w/that.

I've used Autozone thermostats and Walmart Supertec antifreeze in my hondas (and other vehicles) for years and never had an issue.

I live in VT and my car, a 1.5L heats up fine.

People have different standards as to what they use/put in their cars. Some people go the cheap route, and may have good luck with that route. While others may go the more spendy route and as well have good luck. I personally like OEM Honda ish. Thats just MY OPINION.

ummmmm, i disagree as well. im running beck/arnely parts that are bought through Kragen (schucks where your at) and been running my LSV just fine. im also running the regular antifreeze and still no problems.

just buy what is compatible with your motor and you should be fine regardless of where you buy it.

Like I said before, it's my just opinion. I've always had bad luck with autopart store thermostats and antifreeze. From my Geo to my SAAB to my Honda now. When I switched to OEM products, all problems went away.

I respect your opinion and that people should use what they believe in, even if they are spending more money, its their money.

But OEM antifreeze?

Yes, Honda specifies Silicate free coolant. Because other brands use silicates as lubricants for water pumps, while to Honda's Aluminum water pump silicates are like sand paper in place of toilet paper. If you want to risk a $500 repair bill ($90 part, $400 labor) to replace the water pump, just to save $2-$, go ahead.

Wow, didnt think this thread would get as good as it did. So my thermostat isnt working? I thought that it was but never got initiated because of the cold air hitting the car. Its like 30* in NJ. Also, most times I just get in my car and drive, dont warm it up. Still, sounds like thermostat?

Only takes about ten minutes to replace. Cost is between $10.00 and $30.00, depending on your preference. Might as well change it, you have nothing to lose.

BTW, also make sure after the change that you have enough antifreeze and have bled the system of air.

My car does heat up here in VT, but it does take driving a few miles on very cold mornings before the gauge moves. Also due to the design of the system, you should be getting some heat before the gauge moves up to normal range as well.

yep ^ when it's cold you should take a look inside the radiator and see if it appears to be circulatings. if coolants moving around before the engines even had a chance to warm up then your t-stat is definitely stuck open.
