K20 Swap or B18 Turbo???
Im looking to put something faster under my hood i currently have a D16Y8 Factory on my 96 civic Ex. I was looking at the swaps theres some crazy **** around, people are crazy i saw a v6 on a hatch, but then i saw the K20, i looked at a couple videos at youtube and i know they are fast but the ones i look at were around 12 seconds on a quater mile so If a built a B18 turbo i think i cant do better than that. i also know that the K20 is a big swap and that i need like $10,000 to do it (Engine, Tranny, ecu, conversion harness so my gauges work, axles, engine motor mounts for the swap, Tranny intermediate shaft and a lot of soldering and grinding) and for a B18 im looking to spend maybe $3000. the question is, is it worth do the K20 if i can go faster with the B18 turbo??? if you are looking for speed what would you do having the money on hand to do whatever you want???
I would go with the b18 because what you would be spending for the k20, you could build the b18 and have the turbo and everything on it running low 11's or maybe high 10's...
I think Kswaps are neat but the Type R b series powerplants rev high have LSD and fit right in. Kswaps are a lot of money. An EP3 w/ a k24 type R, that would be fun, but a EK CTR is pretty cool too.
how much money are you willing to spend? its hard to jump to a swap and run out of money.. plan everything and save up. thats what i did and do it the first time...
k swaps arent 10k, do research and u may be able to find a k swap that some1 selling cheap because it has a burnt valve or spun rod bearing, replace with stock parts and ur good 2 go
You're right, I would honestly say it depends on what K Series he's wanting, but at the JDM shop here they sell the K20a motor and tranny for I believe $6,000 was what they told me about a year ago, but he could definately buy one from someone and everything, the swaps are easy to find, but the wiring for them suck.. Although if I wasn't going to turbo an LS/Vtec I would love to have a K in my Sol....
with the prices of k-series still so high i would recommend going with a b18 turbo. theres a massive thead of guys with boosted ls's specifically. many of them stock engines, and making 300whp plus. lots of them are into the low 12's high 11's.

well this isn't k20a.org so most of the guys on this site will tell you to go b18 turbo. i however say go k-swap. it can be done for way cheaper than 10k. do NOT go with a k20a, they're too expensive for what they are. go with a type-s motor which is way cheaper, since you'll most likely be swapping the cams out anyway. im currently shooting for 250+ whp on a simple k20 build. same chassis as you. any more and you'll be fighting serious traction problems. i'll take that over a turbo b-series any day. just my opinion. i'm sure i'll get flamed for this.
if your on a budget, go b18 turbo, but if you got the money, go k20, it cost me LOTS of money to finish my k20 into my eg, then 2 months later i got jacked for it.
cost roughly around 8-10k, depending on if you buy new or used parts. kpro was one of the most expensive thing i bought. cost me $1700. i paid $300 for a used ecu, then this stupid shop that ripped me off charged me 1400 to sent it out to hondata to put kpro on it.
go with the b18a1. i just did my b18 swap on my 94 4sdn and it was a bolt in swap with minor fab work. i got a rolled 91 integra for $200 form the wrecker and took everything i needed. i put new water pump, timing belt, head gasket, new CVs and alot of head/intake work. im running the stock 94 civic obd1 P06, obd1 injectors, and obd1 dizzy. the thing RIPPS!! im just going to do up the fuel system and then put a turbo on it. im into the car for under $1700 including the car(17in rims, lowered 3in, and a body kit) i bought it of some girl that ran it out of oil and chucked a rod. and i did the motor swap instead of doing a stock replacement. cheap and quick. this is my first honda... im a muscle car V8 guy... but gas is expensive.
go with b18 cheaper and theres tons of parts for them everywhere...k series is a headache and there are barely fast ones out there that match b series whp...youtube b series on boost and k series on boost then decide...! goodluck.
I have a b18c and I went to a local shop with plenty of reputation (people from chicago and other parts of the US coming in to have them build they're cars like 3 skylines 3 supras and the list goes on, gotta be doing something right!) I was talking to the guy about swapping out to a K series if I had the money and he just said to just build on my motor and turbo it, it'd be just as fast if not faster and a lot cheaper. And remember with boost, its unlimited power!
. Also as ultraplayer26 said it's still really hard to find parts for k-series motors compared to b-series. BOOST THE B SERIES! lol.

Can someone list like all the finances details of a kswap? I'm really interested in doing one but don't have a huge budget. If I get a kseries id like to tear it all apart and put new internals in it but idk. Also, how long can a process like that take? Given I have all the parts, tools and equipment? I've been thinking About a type s swap but idk if it's gonna cost me more that 5-6k...
A K does flow air through it's motor much better. Say in a year or two yo saved some cash, now you can turbo the K series. better potential than the B, and waay more torque
yup. i used my stock 94 civic wiring harness, with the injectors so the harness would plug in, and the stock dizzy(but i had to drill out one bolt hole, just go buy a used 94 integra one and then it will plug in) stock alt, and i swapped out most of the civic sensors on to the b18. and the stock P06 is running the motor fine, im going to chip it when my chip get here. but so far its fine. 1400km on the swap and not a issue.
