Default Sacrilegious to the R? Adding sound dampener?

Highway trips crusing at 5k is pretty loud lol I know the car was stripped of sound dampener to make it lighter and that. But as a DD 5k gets a little annoying. I'm not about to take apart my transmission to add a LS 5th gear and even then its not going to be that much of a difference. So has any one added a sound dampener or some sort to help quiet things down?

You'll find very few owners who still daily drive their R. You'll find even less if any that have added sound absorption materials.

Turn your music up louder, or go buy some earplugs.

You definitely bought the wrong car if you wanted peace and quiet in the cabin.

What exhaust are you using?

I love DDing it though. With the music turned up I dont notice it at all but if you go to have a conversation with someone I feel like we should be wearing helmets with the mics haha. Exhaust is 2.5" from collector to the end of the muffler tip. 2.5" resonated test pipe, 2.5" mandrel bent B piping, 2.5" Spoon N1 axle back. I do have the N1 silencer in it too. Its not that bad. But I wouldnt mind quieting things down just a tad bit cabin noise wise. Maybe just sound dampen the firewall, floor, and trunk floor? I doubt it weighs that much. 50lbs is nothing to me if I can have a considerably more quiet ride. Obviously I wouldnt want to sound proof it, then I have to open the windows to enjoy the sweet sound of VTEC.

jon d,
once again i agree with your post and im not trying to add insult to injury
unfortunatly i still daily my itr since i bought the car new and im the original owner and i cant wait to get something else
so i can keep her in the garage where she stays everynight
now here is my point to the op it is pointless to add sound deadning to the itr.
i personally love hearing all the weird, harsh sounds that you would not hear in your everyday car. thats why i bought it!
to me i love the raw nature of it that is why i still have it...
only thing i can say is its for the hardcore
type r's dont come with earplugs

Tell you what, we can trade exhausts for a while and you can use my buddy club spec III (yeah not even the spec II) for a while, then after you put your exhaust back on you won't even be able to hear it haha

On a serious note, if it pleases you to DD your car i won't see why throwing some dynamat down would hurt. If you sold it the new owner can easily reverse it by just spending several days chiseling it out.

It sounds to me like you just need a different exhaust. Have you ever driven the car with a stock exhaust. It sounds great, is quiet and if you are daily driving the car i can't see you needing the extra 1/4".

If you are set on using an aftermarket exhaust, i would recommend looking into a either a Mugen Twinloop or HyTech twinloop. The Mugen is the cheaper of the two, but the HyTech is superior to all else on the market.

do you really have to chisel dynamat out? no good lol I thought it was just adhesive sheets you put down. Its my DD + weekend track car. Double duty lol. Usually you have a car for both daily and then track. Well I am kinda trying to mix them. IDK I dont mind it at all I love the noise around town and shorter trips. But holding it at 5k or more for an hour + starts to get like alright already.

I'm telling you, invest in a different exhaust and your problem will be solved. Its not the engine noise that's bothering you, it is the exhaust. Find a local R owner with a stock, Fujitsubo RM01A, Mugen Twin-loop or HyTech exhaust. All of these exhaust offer a moderate tone when not under WOT, but will still give you the excitement you're looking for when on track or spirited driving.

5,000 RPM in 5th gear on stock trans and tires is 94 mph...this is 'cruising'?

lol

I have had stock exhaust on all of my R's and noise isn't much of a problem at all, and if it is then it is past 80mph on the freeway.

DD'd mine (with family mind you) since 2003 to the tune of 180k miles. Bought it stock and it has stayed that way. The highway noise on the initial test drive certainly got my attention - and my reference was a 97 GSR... The noise bothered me a little during the first year, but I am completely used to it now. I am now annoyed in 'regular' cars by all the wind and road noise !

I can't imagine DD-ing it with an exhaust that is any louder than stock. You really have to quiet the exhaust to make it liveable during long drives.

This. Sound dampening in the usual Integra locations won't quiet a loud exhaust. Plenty of ITR owners have returned their exhaust to stock or stock sounding and love the caR all over again for DD.
Also, do you have the rear seats installed?

Same here DD all over florida. Looking to return the exhaust to stock The mugen twin loop has a decent noise level. At a certain speed it is completely quiet.

Yeah the N1 is pretty loud, makes a sort of booming sound too. I would rather switch to a stock exhaust system(could go JDM system for 2.5 inch) than put sound dampener stuff in, which won't make much of a difference with an N1.

The largest contributor to the noise would be your exhaust. I personally have a RMOA1 installed and also installed Dynamat just in the spare tire area. I DD it with the seats up and back deck cover installed and it is as quiet/quieter than stock exhaust with my silencer installed in the muffler. Take out the silencer, drop the seats, cruise above 5k and it will make your ears bleed.

It is your car. I added Dynamat Xtreme to the doors and rear quarters of my GSR. It significantly reduced the tire and road noise. I run a Mugen twin loop, which is extremely quiet.

To Dynamat properly, you could line the roof, floor, firewall, doors, and quarterpanels. It would add about 50 pounds ot the car.

10-15lbs of dynamat will make a big difference. it's not really that much weight and it's on the floor

I drive my ITR 22 miles back and forth to work five days a week, my average speed is around 80MPH, with stock exhaust. I love the raw feeling of the car, and I can deffinitly feel the differences after having owned two LS's before my ITR. Throwing some sound dampening over just getting a new exhaust is just crazy, but whatever works. Now modifying the trans in such a way where you're downgrading is just crazy and not worth it.

Hi Paul,

Are you planning on gettting a beater to daily drive? I didn't realize you were forced to daily the R. I'm sure you are aware of the risks at this point, yes? Keep her safe man.

Looks like I'm breaking another R thing lol The turbo should help muffle the exhaust noise I love my Spoon N1. 5k over long distances is not that bad but I say why not make it more quiet?

I've been forced to drive my ITR back and fourth to work since I've purchased in in June of 2009. Yes i'm aware of just about every negative factor of daily driving my ITR. I do have an Accord, just waiting to replace the clutch and I will be driving that more often to work.

And if you knew where I worked, you'd **** your pants and probably try to shoot me for driving my car their everyday!
