I just picked up a 92 DB2 GS-R with the infamous b17! I don't really have big plans for it other than fixing up the body and paint to original form. So the motor has 174,xxx miles on it, previous owner did the timing belt and oil/water pump at 120,xxx so I figured it should still be good for a while. but it needs valve lash adjusted and axles. anyone certain axles you guys praise? I have always had vibration issues with autozone/advance auto remans! Also i'm doing a radiator flush and thermostat and trans flush using all OEM honda parts. Last but not least a oil change, but the car was sitting for 7 months before I bought it so should I just change the oil and run the car for a few hundred miles and drain the oil and then do another oil change to make sure the motor is fresh or will it be fine? I had a few friends tell me to use one of those "internal engine cleaners" like Seafoam etc. But I dunno if I trust them. Also what plugs and gap do you guys recommend? Just looking to get the car running back to it's OEM 100%, it's stock down to the airbox and I just wanna restore it's little pep it had from factory I guess you could say
I heard on Cartalk that the stuff about needing to change the oil after the car has been sitting around is a myth that doesn't apply to modern cars. I don't remember why, but I figure at least one change couldn't hurt. At least you'd get your preferred oil in. I'm superstitious about those engine cleaners and things but I've never tried them. I have an 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' attitude towards them but some people swear by them.
i'll throw my .02 cents in here, but everyone's different. i'd say the oil would be fine, even with it sitting for several months...as long as moisture didn't get into the engine it'll be fine. i would do the seafoam treatment though. make sure you do it the right way though...divide one can into 3 equal parts. put one in the oil, one in the gas (make sure the tank is full first) and last, remove a vacuum line and let the engine suck the last part into the engine...you'll probably need someone to keep the throttle up while you're doing that one. fyi, it'll smoke like crazy when you do that, but the smoke won't last but a few seconds and it'll be gone. drive the car till the tank of gas is gone, then change the oil and spark plugs...engine will be cleaned and good to go. as for the axles, i used to work at advance and the reman's there suck, but the brand new ones are good for stock apps. if you're planning on make more power down the road, you might want to source a set a little more beefy.
