Default Greetings from the Commonwealth of Dominica, West Indies

Some you may or may not know that I'm going to Ross University School of Medicine here in Portsmouth, Dominica. This is my first full day here and I decided to share some pics with you. In case you are wondering, my R is safe at home. Dominica is very lush and green, more hot/humid than Hawaii. It is a 3rd world country and most people live in houses not as nice as the apartments around the school. Most cars are right hand drive, but I haven't seen too many 'nice' cars. Lots of 4x4 5-speed trucks (Hiluxes, etc).

Google Maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=...&z=17

I will try to take more pics and update this thread when I go on some excursions before school starts.

Some buildings on campus.

The library.

The main gate.

Outside the gates looking at one of the buildings.

Robert Ross Blvd heading towards Portsmouth (about 2 miles).

Ross Blvd the other way, the school is on the right.

Some apartments in the background.

The newly built KFC (Subway is the only other FF franchise). They have extra crispy, spicy chicken. No extra charge for breast meat.

The Annex (about 1/4 mile from the main campus) is where all 1st semester students have classes.

Michael Douglas Blvd!!!!! No, not the actor. He was a politician in Dominica.

Water front alongside M.D. Blvd.

Some boats in Portsmouth.

Update: Jan 3, 2010

The school had an excursion to go to Carib Territory (where the Carib Indian reservation is) and Emerald Pool. I went as I had nothing else to do. I must say the island is beautiful. I did see a CW DB8R driving in the opposite direction. No pics though.

These Dominican drivers are awesome. They can drive pretty fast on the winding, narrow roads with large 20+ passenger buses.

The coastline.

Some island along the coastline.

Sign at Calibishie.

Calibishie.

Immature cacao. They're ready when the pods are red.

Sign for the Carib Territory cultural place.

Music and dancing by Carib Indians.

Canoe built by the Carib Indians.

Cassava bread making. Made from the toxic cassava root, but I guess they know how to make it without it being toxic.

I bought one. It was ok, a little fibrous and chewy.

More coastline.

Small waterfall.

The waterfall runs into the ocean. It is hard to see because of the lack of depth. But it is amazing.

Emerald Pool is a pool fed by a waterfall.

Trail leaving Emerald Pool.

The Atlantic Ocean from a distance.
