Del Sol Si sputtering at Idle low power and mpg
Hi everyone,
I have a 93 del sol si with the stock D16 engine in it. My problem is intermittent, at Idle sometimes my rpm will move from around 1k to 500 and when it hits 500 it the engine will sputter and shake the car just a bit. Also occasionally my sol will have trouble (in first gear only) accelerating under 2900 RPM. When I start rolling, I have little power until 2900 RPM and then normal power kicks in. I don't have that problem unless I'm in first gear. I have also been getting crappy mileage 25 or so mpg down from around 30 mpg. I don't have any CELs popping up and my timing belt has not been changed for at least 30k miles. Any suggestions? I have recently changed the spark plugs, and that did not help. Thanks in advance for any help!

Well my past problem might not be like yours, but my car did sputter sometimes at certain RPMS and it was because of bad wires. Replaced them and it ran like a charm.
Also check your air/fuel?

Cool, I'll check that too, I was thinking about running seafoam through it, tank, engine, and oil... I doubt that would cure my problem, just hoping to regain some of my mileage, does 30 mpg sound about right for a d16 sol?
I was also wondering... If I do end up replacing the plugs and wires, does it matter what brand I get, I saw some at pepboys for like 19.99 and a cap for 13.99, I figure if I'm not running any performance parts it shouldn't make a difference yeah?
30 mpg is normal man, no problem there. I get ~29.5 mpg, same year/model.
I would spend the money and get OEM-spec NGK wires (they make "power wires", and regular wires. you want the cheaper ones. don't be fooled by sellers on eBay selling NGK plugs with the wires and misleading you into thinking the wires are NGK too). I bought the cheapos from Advance Auto Parts a little over a year ago and when I pulled one of them out the other day it crumbled apart into several pieces (yes, I used dielectric grease when I installed it and used a twist-pull motion to remove it). The NGK ones feel much more durable and I regret wasting money on the generic ones last time.
Before you go wasting money on wires though, check the resistance on the spark plug wires. It should be under 25,000 Ohms.
