it it bad to cruise at 4000RPM+ for a long time?
i just started college a week ago (20 miles away) and i gotta take a couple highways. im usually going 80-90 at 4000+ rpm for like a good 10-20 mins at a time on my way there, with some bursts of 3-4th gear vtec. anyways, is that bad? i have a 95 GSR with 58k miles.
Whoa a '95 with 58K! That's good. I think as long as you do your miantenace intervals when required and take car of it with high quality oil. But I would rather drive a 3K is what I normaly drive at in the LA freeways at about 70-75mph.
I often drive at 4500-5000rpm in 5th for periods of 15-25 minutes at a time (usually in the dead of night) i've never encountered any problems
yep, i bought it with 55k like 2 monthgs ago...took me 4 months to find that unique one. anyone got a listing of all normal required maintenence intervals?

Yeah, when i'm on the freeway, I usually do around 80-90 and that's between 4000-4700 in my car. I don' think it really hurts the engine, I just don't think you get very good gas mileage. If you're going 60-65, you're still into the "economy" lobes. Around 4400 is where vtec starts to engage right? So I figure you get worse gas mileage crusing around that range.
VTEC engagement at 4400? I thought it was just up over 5500. Am I wrong? I've got a buddy with a Type R and his is at right about 5700, is it different on GSRs?
everytime i am on the highway i drive a minimum of 80mph, or 4000rpm. often 90mph, 4500rpm or so. In 7 years, i have taken scores of trips (that means 10's and 10's of trips) of 300+ miles, driving between 80-100mph. I still got 30mpg.
ok, now how the **** do you still get 30mpg? since i got my car my best fillup was around 24.2 MPG .. no AC and like highway and city driving. how can you get that good?
go for a long long drive. you can't compare city + highway to just highway.
for comparison, I get between 20-24mpg in the city. i've even gotten 18mpg when i was really "enthusiastic"

it should be fine, like someone else said, do your required maint.
I have found that our cars get the best mileage right about 80ish, and once you go over to the high lobes, ciao gas mileage.
the longest I have ever gone at high RPM I did 200 miles at 120mph at 3am from san antonio to houston. that with no slowing. I got about 17mpg. (whatever RPM that was, it was so long ago, I don't even remember). no ill effects on my engine either, no burning oil, 110k miles, and 155hp
I can get over 30 if I stay at about 80 though.

I do 160 mile round trips every week @ 4000 RPM and the car is running fine (shes at 72,XXX miles). Just be sure to keep up with all the maintenance.
I agree keep up w/ your maintenance and your car will be fine.. when I was in college in Nor Cal I would try to have tuesday/thursday classes and have discussion/lab/sections on wednesdays (or tues and thurs) so that I could drive down to So Cal (400+ mile trip ONE WAY) every weekend to see my ex-gf... I would drive at least 80-90 MPH and often times I'd be hitting 120MPH on that 400+ mile trip... not sure if anyone has been on I5 going from So Cal to Nor Cal lately but EVERYONE is going 80-90 MPH on that road....even the minivans, SUVs, beaters, etc...
the grapevine was also fun.. going uphill at 100MPH in VTEC w/ the motor screaming and flying by SUV's it was funny to see people in their "V8's" just look in amazement as my little 4 banger came flying past them... anyway my car went through this every weekend.. and I didn't really baby it when driving at other times either... I'm the only owner and have maintained it well.. 3K oil changes, annual fluid flush/replacements (brake, tranny, coolant, etc), 15K valve adjustments, 30K cap/rotor, fuel filter, etc... did all my routine maintences... my cars still fine...never broken down or left me stranded.....

ITR's 5th u would be running at like 4000 RPM..my friends on the freeway driving for like 10 minutes..or like 20 minutes..5th gear, its at like 4000 to 4500 RPMs..but thats an ITR..but i would most prolly sey that its not as bad as long as u dont constantly gun it..keep good care of ur car..get oil changed at right time..service it good and ur okay..
the above post is correct , I assume you would get worse mpg after 5500 after the secondaries open, unless more fuel is added at 4400 when the third lobe is in use.
Wow, is auto having a different gear ratio or something? I drive 80mph everyday for 100 miles and it is only 3300rpm for me. By the way, combined city and freeway (20%/80%) gets me 32mpg in a stock RS auto with 69k miles.

no cops or what?
