Timing belt change on my CRX
Ive got the old timing belt out and am about to pick up the new one tomorrow morning but i have a few questions after doing a little research.
First is my 1987 Honda CRX Si ( D15a3 ) a non-interference motor or am i screwed? now the timing belt did not break its just missing a whole hell of alotta teeth and shut off on me when i was going down the road so i dont know if that makes a difference.
Second is how do i get it back into time if im not screwed? ive done all the work on my honda and its my first car and id like to continue to use the car to learn till i can get money to pay to fix it up, seeing as the car so far has been relatively simple to fix i enjoy using it as a test dummy.
Any help here would be nice. Thank you.

TDC is your friend.
The crank pulley bolt is tough to get off, you will need a massive breaker bar or the help of an impact wrench.
Replace the water pump while you are in there.
And I am willing to bet that you have bent some valves.

^^^ QFT.
Theres a service manual on red pepper racing .com (all one word)
Itll tell you how to line your engine up properly.
But like scott says, unless youre really lucky you more than likely have some bent valves.
IMO its worth a shot to line it back up and try it though. I probably wouldnt bother with the water pump if you plan on scrapping the engine/car if it is indeed messed up.

i really hope i dont have to fix the intake valves but ill def look up the manual tonight on red pepper tonight. i dont get a chance to get to my car till this upcoming monday and i will try then. I really love this site for this exact reason, yall are really helpful with these things.

Those engines love to break the cam when the timing belt goes. Or break the cam when run low on oil, stripping out the timing belt of a few teeth.
If the teeth that remain aren't peeling off easily from the side when picked at, meaning the belt is old and garbage, then you probably ran the engine low on oil --> starved the head for oil --> siezed/broke the cam --> stripped the timing belt of a few teeth.
Hope it's not that, though, and is just a simple fix. Good luck!

Ok well the new belt is on and it is as close to perfectly in time as it can be. Its broke though. The motor is dead and i dont have the money to rebuild. My buddy has a B-18 motor ( not sure of the exact engine code on it ill get that asap ) how difficult would it be to switch the motors? He will sell it to me for 500 but what other parts am i looking at because i only have a 2 month time frame to get this done in. Im using my fathers truck till the end of febuary and then im ****ed for a vehicle and working with no vehicle is damn near impossible. so if needed to catch other peoples attention as well ill start a new thread. But a b-18 swap is mostlikely the cheapest way to go from what ive heard. The tranny comes with the b-18 btw.
for a b18 swap youll need some other things:
Custom axles (hasport has these)
Custom engine mounts (hasport or innovative)
Custom shift linkage (hasport)
Custom wiring (rywire.com)
ECU from b18 (ebay or here)
Front hubs/brakes from 1986-1989 Integra (junkyard)
If you buy all this stuff at retail youre looking at well over $1000.

thank you guys for the input. Seeing as i figured as much i kept looking and my girl found a motor for me for 250 bucks from a family friend. it should be the exact same thing thats in my car now ( d15a3 ) so the exchange should be fairly simple.
OK, so for an update lol. The motor we have is from an 88 crx, its fuel injected and a 1.6 liter but where on the engine will i find the code? i have looked and cannot find it, maybe im just blind. My guess is its a D16a6 but i want to be entirely sure and if it is what issues may i run into trying to get it into a 87 CRX setup for a D15a3?
well as new information arises im posting it here because im losing my mind, im running out of time on the vehicle i am driving so. The motor i was told i was sold was a 1.6..but after a little research the ******* was wrong. Its a damn 1.5 liter D15b2, so what would i have to do to put that in my car over the D15a3 thats currently in there atm? Again im sorry for the constant change of information.
Also, is the block from a D15b2 the same as the D15a3? Because if they are couldnt i just take everythign off my motor and put it on the other one to make it a D15a3?

u shoul be able to jus take the block from the new motor and put all the other stuff from ur stock one on it... not 100% on that but i think
I was concerned that the 250$ motor from the friend was going to be incorrect. I'd try getting my money back (good luck). Pull the head off your motor and take it to a machine shop.
Well i keep checking and finding options that might work but the only ones that will actually work cost lots of money lol. My buddy has an eagle talon that runs just fine he might be selling for 400 just so i have somethin to drive to work and what not. If i buy a diff car then i can really sit down with my crx and start savin up money to build something nice and not just fix it.
