Default 95 Civic Si: Car cuts out at about 4700 rpm and throws code 9

Yes I've searched and searched and searched.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I have a pretty much stock 95 Si Hatch (stock d16z6). The cars runs excellent until you take it above 4500 rpm. At around 4500-4700 rpm it's almost like the rev limiter kicks in and the car cuts out till about 5000 rpm, but if you continue to accelerate it will stop cutting out but doesn't seem to have much power and throws a code 9 everytime.

Before I checked the code I replaced the vtec solenoid with one from a spare motor I have and it didn't fix the problem. I haven't done a ton of trouble shooting yet just thought I would get some starting points from you guys first.

My first thought is to replace the distributor but I don't understand why it only cuts out and throws the code 9 right around 4700 rpm and runs fine below that. Is there something with the vtec triggering the code?

Thanks again for the help

Sounds like a vtec issue but I'm not an expert with VTec. so, bump

Yep, as far as I know it's all stock, but I've only owned the car a week so I'm still working out all the bugs. I do have a spare one that I know for sure is stock that I could swap in.

Yea I know what the code 9 is, I'm just not sure why it is triggering that code. Is the CYP actually going bad or is something else causing that sensor to malfunction? I would be more convinced that the CYP was going bad if the car idled rough or ran like crap up to the 4500ish rpm range but it doesn't.

So Anon, you thinkin that maybe someone swapped in a Auto ecu so it is confused causing it to cut out? That actually might be the case. I went out of town but will be back tomorrow and will try this first thing. This could also explain the really low idle (like 500 rpm).

Thanks everyone for the comments, keep it coming just incase this theory doesn't fix it.

I doubt it's an auto ECU causing the trouble. I would try an alternate CYP from that spare engine you have.

Well the CYP is in the distributor right? Unfortunately I don't have an extra distributor. That's on my list though, to hunt down one I can borrow to test with.

I remember when i had a code 9. i opened up the distributor and all the wires inside were cracked and you could see the copper wires. that may be your problem. also it doesn't cost anything to take a peek.

Well I did some testing today, pulled the distributor off and pulled it apart. Everything looked good but the resistance on the CYP was a little low.

I bit the bullet and bought a new (well, remanufactured) distributor and it fixed it. I took it all the way to red line and it ran fine with no codes.

Thanks for the help everyone.
