Factory service manual is the "diy" guide. But I must make a warning that you need the tools and experience of a real mechanic. If you have never done it before, make sure you are ready, there are a lot of things that are assumed in the FSM.

If you are a skilled mechanic and have the proper tools, then it is an 8 hour job including cleanup.

13 years ago when I thought I knew how to work on cars it took me 4 weeks.

When you take it off def look at your bottom end you might have to send it out to a machine shop if you got it hot enough

Damn. I've never changed a head gasket, you're making me scared of it.

No need to be scared. You just need to know what you are doing. Make sure you study... and by study I mean read and understand the FSM, not read posts on h-t that may or may not be factual.

If you don't have a lot of experience working on cars, I would recommend recruiting the help of someone who does know what they are doing. Practice is the only way to get good at this ****.

There is a reason the good garages charge $100/hr.

This is a perfect example of what I mean. The answer to these questions is on pages 6-57 through 6-64 of my FSM. All you he has to do is read it, look at the diagrams, and the right way to do it is explained in detail. By asking on the forums, he will get many different answers from many different people.

-rotate the motor so the #1 piston is at TDC
-unbolt any grounds connected to the head
-drain the coolant
-unbolt the exhaust manifold
-take off the valve cover
-take off upper timing cover
-if you have power sterring disconnect it
-unbolt the camshaft holders using an outward to inward pattern
-take out the holders and slide the camshaft out
-unbolt the head bolts in a criss cross outward to inward pattern
-yank the head off with the intake manifold if you can
-if not, unbolt the intake manifold too

*u should also put a straight edge on the block to see if u warped it.
and u might want to take the head to a machine shop and see if it needs to be resurfaced.
