Default How do I know if V-tec is working?

Sorry guy's new to the Honda world! My 92 si pulls even harder pass the 6800-7200 rpm. What does that mean? I really dont want to hurt it, just dont know what v-tec is?

And another problem i'm having is the factory temp. gauge is reading hot, but the car doesn't over heat. Does anybody know's what kind of problem that is?
