Default Expensive education about non-OEM parts

At least for fuel pumps and alternators. 87 Accord DX auto 139K miles. Original fuel pump lasted 20 years, 116K miles. Replaced with aftermarket Carter with new strainer and discharge filters and the tank was clean, no rust. That one lasted 22 months to 135K miles. Replaced again with a Carter that lasted TWO DAYS, obviously defective. Free replacement of course, again new strainer and filter. Car was driven to Fla from NY a couple weeks ago. Once down here the pump started acting up again, wouldn't run with every key on and it got really noisy. The pump relay was changed with the last pump change but just to make sure I jumpered right from the battery to the pump, same thing, sometimes it'd go, sometimes not. Pulled it out, bought a Honda replacement, can't even hear it run. Original alt lasted 106K miles, 19 years til 7/06. Installed aftermarket, lasted til 137K miles 11/09. Put in another aftermarket. Three days ago I go to start car in the morning, nothing, battery is totally dead. This was a new battery installed 8/09. Installed battery from other vehicle, made up a test light, disconnected neg cable from bat and connect test light between cable and neg post. Light is on bright with key off. Disconnect charge cable at alt, light goes out. Shorted diode in alt. Pull out alt and order Honda remanand get battery charged. Done with aftermarket except for filters, plugs, hoses. Live and learn.
