Rack & Pinion Question
So i have a question about my rack and pinion... Heres the problem, while braking I have vibration thats not coming from the brakes or wheel bearing but from the rack its self... The pic below shows where its really loose at! I was soundering if theres any advice on replacing this, if i can rebuild it or even just tightn this... Thanks!!!
ah i looked at the pics thru my blackberry.
yeah, rack end bushing. very common wear item in all manual racks.
long discusion here. cheap part, but kinda difficult to get to. really do recommend dropping the whole rack in order to replace it. dont forget to adjust the pinion too.

absolutely.
it really needs to be changed if it hasnt already on all CRX's and civics (with manual racks). the feel is SO much better after.
and theres no "rebuilt" manual rack available as far as i have seen. if its listed for the crx, then its probably mistaken as a crossover part for the power steering civics. the reason is probably that theres really nothing to "rebuild" other than the bushing and the pinion bearing. the labor to take the rack out to swp is 90% of the labor to do replace the bushing. the pinion bearing doesnt need to be replaced unless youre completely taking the pinion out.

Cool man thanks a lot. What I will do is buy both bushings and inner tie rod ends, the outers have been replaced recently on this car. I have been searching for a rack all weekend and now realize why they don't reman them. Thanks again

WOW OK HOLD ON... Tyson, I went to the junk yard to get alteast most of the parts including the bushing. but i had trouble 25 appart from the knucke.. Neva got it off. Than I tryd to get 20 21 22 by yankin 25 and I had nooooo budge at all.... Any advise?
why are you getting the parts from a junkyard???
its a $10 part for the bushing at the dealer. thats it.
you are not going to take anything apart by yanking. please consult a factory service manual if you are trying this yourself for the first time. you can get it online if you search.

Im not trying to "thread jack" or anything, but Tyson seems to know his ****. Im having this problem also (i.e. steering wheel vibration ALL the time, not just while braking). My wheels and tires are balanced, and Ive borrowed my brothers wheels and tires for a day which are also balanced, and it still shakes. I have DA integra front spindles on the car, which is a 1991 hatch BTW. Would the rack bushing be the place to check first? I haven't even suspected my rack until i read this thread. My buddy has a CRX and he tightened the steering colume (sp?) where it attaches to the rack and he said it took some slop out of the steering and made it more responsive. Do you have any info about that? Because i didnt really know what he was talking about, lol
