Default E85, whats all the hype??

Gettin back into the Honda boosted scene, and reading alot of build threads and such, and I noticed alot of people mentionneding converting to E85

Is it just a type of gas available at the pump?? Im in canada, and ive personally never seen it at a pump.

Are there boost related benefits directly related to running e85?

Drawbacks??

Just looking for the quick and dirty

85 is the new alternative fuel. much cheaper than regular gasoline, and its also higher octane like race gas. You can get some great power numbers out of it. Draw backs it burns liek 60% more i think? i was talking to a tuner and he said you needed about 60% injector or something like that... i cant remember. but its along those lines.

So more power, cheaper fuel, draw backs? not many... except its hard to find. Its becoming available at pumps threw out the us, but my closest e85 station is about 45 minutes away.

Something that a friend of a friend wrote regarding E85 by BG products. Interesting read for those considering E85 for POWER purposes outside of being "green".

Actually, E85 has been around since the days of Henry Ford. It just faded away for awhile until people found it to be useful.

On an average E85 requires 20-25% more fuel for a stoich burn(complete burn with no waste). With the higher octane rating a benefit is (depending on boost level) you can run a higher CR, therefore making more power in relation to the amount of fuel used. Its just too bad E85 isnt common outside of the midwest.

It is not ''much'' cheaper as its only about 20-25 cents less but you use 30 percent more. So it being cheaper definately isnt a reason people use it. Now ''much'' cheaper than race fuel but not regular pump gas.

It may not be cheaper than the 92 octane, but e85 has a octane rating of about 105 and a burn rate that is 1/2 the burn rate of 92 octane. Therefore you can run more boost or more ignition timing and get more power.

Now compare the price of e85 with 110 octane race gas and you will find out that e85 is about 1/4 of the price of 110 octane.

You apparently need to learn how to read. Was i comparing the prices of it to race fuel? i was replying to him saying ''it was a cheaper alternative to regular gasoline''.

I could have gone onto the specifics of why it is better than regular gasolin but simply was replying to him saying ''it was a cheaper alternative to regular gasoline''..

right now e85 is 2.29 in my area. If the 30 percent rule is correct you are now paying 2.99 in a sense. so its not cheaper than regular gasoline.

CHEAPER OR NOT THE GAINS FROM 2.65 A GALLON OVER 92 IS AWSOME, AND THE GAIN OER COST PER GALLON TO 110 ISNT EVEN CLOSE THESE ARE THE REASONS WE LOVE THE corn BABAY.

I MEAN IM ALL FOR SAVING SOME CASH

It's compared to race gas because that's why you'd run it - for more power with pump gas. The tuners I've talked to say ~8% increase over 93 octane is the norm, so you'll get much more if all you can get locally is 91. It also burns cooler & can be burned leaner, so you can help gas milage if you tune partial throttle correctly.

In some areas like the midwest, it can be very close to 93 in terms of price. Right now many states are using e70 due to the cold issue ethanol has, so make sure you know what you're pumping.

What do you do if you tune your car in the winter on E85 which is actually E70. Then you fill up in the summer and the ethanol level has changed to a "true" E85?

Retune it, or turn your FPR up a tad and enjoy less HP than you could have.

Any idea about how much I should increase my fpr if I'm at about 475whp on 1000s? I'm running the s300, what's a 2timer or a "program and the demon"?

2timer is a chip that has a ground on it and you can swtich maps by hooking the ground up. the demon is a board that goes in place of the chip kinda like hondatas boards but you can use a program like ectune, neptune or crome and tune on the fly and datalog via 1 usb cable.

well if you switch to e85 and your out of injector, then you need to bump up the base fuel pressure with the fpr.

My neighbors e85 tuned EK is a nightmare to start during the winter! the alcohol just doesn't do as well in cold weather i guess.

you can get around cold starts on the tune if you know what your doing. if you garage it, you shouldnt have that big of a problem either.

So you run E85 all year without touching your tune?
