Default Best way to clean an aluminum engine?

I'm having a hell of a time cleaning up this engine. I've searched the forums and most people say to use Simple Green, engine cleaner, steel wool etc... I've tried all of that with minimal results. I even have a bit for my drill with a metal brush and that still takes a very long time, plus it's too big to fit in some of the spaces. I also have Mother's aluminum polish, tooth brushes and sandpaper. Nothing seems to do the trick.

Is there any way I can get the chemical that is used to hot tank an engine? I had my GSR block and head hot tanked when I built that motor and it came out spotless.

besides painting it.. the only other real way of getting it done is getting it media blasted. but since your motor is still together..i don't think you'll be going that route. its usually done when the engine is disassembled, the block will be put in a tumbler where media is blasted as it cleaning the surface.

here is a example of a block media blasted

USE A STEAM CLEANER. With a little degreaser and a wire brush for agitating, a steam cleaning has worked miracles for me. http://www.houston-imports.com/forum...roadragedetail

Thanks guys, I really don't want to disassemble the engine for media blasting nor do I have access to a steam cleaner. Today I bought some sanding pads for my air tools, but it cut too deep and left scarring on the block.

It's really not that important if it's clean, I just thought I'd give it a try before I swap it in the car.

While this works like a champ....it will not only remove any dirt/grease/grime on the engine, but if you get it on the nuts/bolts, that nice gold galvanizing that is on it will go bye-bye, taking their corrosion resistance with it!
