Default noob to REAL welding

So i own a crappy mig welder with no gas... and i do some basic welding with it. Ive taken welding classes in school i know the basics on how to do it. What i want to do now is get something a little more serious for welding.

my question is what type of welder makes those nice welds you see on stainless manifolds and such O_o Tig or Mig? and what MAKES a good welding machine?

all info and help would be MUCH appreciated!
