Icon2 D16z6 vs D16y8 (newbie)

I've searched all over this site for my answer and I came up with nothing. Maybe because imma newbie lol.

My question is, between the d16z6 and d16y8, based on tuning and bolt-ons, which will produce more power? (if possible, why does it produce more power?)

The differences between the two motors (including the difference in potential) is insignificant. If your car is OBD1, go with the Z6. If it's OBD2, go with the Y8 (or Y5 with a VTEC tranny!!!). And don't worry about it.

If you want the D series with the most potential, it's the D16A6. Yes, it's non-VTEC. VTEC is great for street cars. But for all out drag racing, VTEC is just an unnecessary complication. The A6 has a stronger bottom end and with head work and cams, the A6 actually flows the best. NA build or turbo; put your big money into a custom tranny and you're all set. But for most of us, the Z6 or Y8 with bolt-ons is the most cost effective.

Truth be told, the Y8 is better for street driving and the Z6 is better for drag. But not until you've put down a couple grand. The Y8's manifold gives better response leaving from a stop and better low end. The Z6 is better for top end.

I prefer the Y8. But I also prefer EG's. The trouble with the throttle cable, vacuum hoses, proper ECU isn't worth putting a Y8 in an EG. And neither will stand up to a B16 or even an LS swap, despite the cost savings. Having stuck with the D series for many years, I think I credibility when I tell you just to get an LS with a B16, GSR, or Type R trans. If you got money, get a GSR.

I sold my whole Civic and just bought a whole Integra GSR. And I'm not looking back.

like suspendedhatch said it is just better to go b series you could get a whole ls for like 700 and there just basically almost a plug and play deal depending on if you have obd1 or obd2a or obd2b

The z6 is the better bottom end. it has better oil flow than the a6 and y8. at high hp the y8 and a6 tend to spin crank/rod bearings do to the lack of oil feed that its getting. i recommend that you shim the oil pump for more oil pressure. as for the head. the z6 head combustion chamber is larger than the y8 head, the Z6's ports go straight in to the combustion chamber, whereas the Y8's turn to the side to promote a swirling motion all else is equal, the y8 head can raise the compression ratio approximately .5 vs. a z6 head... z6 tho straight up is the better motor out of all 3.. I've had all 3 already...

I think SOHC's are easier to maintain though less parts to replace. I hav had both Z6 and Y8 and I like my Z6 the best so far. I think mainly cause it is OBD 1. Plus my del Sol trans makes a big difference on acceleration but kinda sucks on the highway at 75 to 80. JMO

This isn't quite right, d16a6 blocks are just as good as d16z6 blocks. It's the d16y8(vtec) and d16y7(non-vtec) blocks have the bad reputation for spinning bearings.

My vote is z6.

I have heard it both ways. Alot of poeple use the Y7 to boost and build. Why? Whats so much better bout them? Other than cheaper most of the time

Roller Tipped Rockers. You can run a much more agressive cam profile in the Y7 head than any other D series head. And roller rockers = less drag which = more HP.
