Cage? No Cage?
hey everyone, im trying to my head right...
I have everything i need for a cage..../pipe/welder/bender, but am building my crx from the ground up (everything painted, new etc) but am a little bit worried that in a years time when i still want to enjoy my crx, i'll regret doing a permanent mod like a cage.
It would be a 6 point welded in cage so no interior trim in rear and dash cut to fit etc.
Main concern is..... no rear trim and what if my 05 Maxima gets boring and i want to take the CRX to the shops, wont be to easy to get in and out of with a cage...
If you had the money/experience to put a cage in would you?

If you rally, auto-x, drag (and youre fast), or want to stunt drive... but if you just DD it and you are worried about the long run, IMO I would not do it.
But, after it all boils down, it is your call.

i was goin to do one for my hatch but its better not to do it unless its a race car cause that makes that more complicated to get in and out of the car and taking things in and out of the hatch but its your call
Are you ever going to do any type of Sanctioned racing? If the answer isn't a definite "yes" then I would wait. You can always come back down the road and install a cage.
If you want to stiffen it up a bit, then install a roll bar. Just before you do anything, think about what type of racing you might ever be doing and make sure you build the cage to the regulating clubs rule book. I know nhra cages can be made from erw mild steel and both nasa and scca require DOM mild as a minumum.
Also if you plan to drive it on the streets I would stay away from a full cage, especially in a crx which lacks in head room anyways.

It's not my daily driver... I will be doing circuit days but no racing. I'm leaning toward the roll bar and just overall better suspension.

I'd say it depends on the style of the cage and how extreme it is (i.e. door bars or no door bars). A cage would be a huge plus for safety in a DD. One momentary lapse of judgement for a soccer mom driving an 8000lb SUV and anyone in an EF is likely taking a slow ride in the back of a Cadillac four days later.
This was my '90 hatch halfway through. It was going to be a dedicated weekend/track car, but I ended up scrapping the project before it was finished.

That is precisely why I recommended against it. A simple smack from behind could be enough to crack someone's head open. Padding would help but it would probably still be pretty dangerous
For most people a roll bar is a better option, though. It's cheaper and you have the option to remove it later on.
