Default 97 to ex to non vtec

Along while ago I bought a 97 ex stock with 1.6 vtec motor popped my boss then put a non vtec motor in it. car ran ok but had check engine light on and would not rev over 5.5k. that was fine bec i didnt have to pass emissions but now as im considering putting the car in my name and driving it again after 2years of siting. I think the car still has the 97 ex ecu in it. If i replaced the ecu with a non vtec ecu would that turn off my light. the check engine light was for unknown ecu error if i recall. that was 3 years ago. Thank you all for your time.

Well the ecu probably caused a CEL because the ecu was looking for the Vtec to be there and it wasn't. So switching the ecu should correct the problem.
