1991 CRX SI Passing Smog Test Problem
Hey guys,
I have a stock 1991 Honda CRX SI that I'm having problems passing smog on.
I passed 3 years ago barley so this time I put in a bottle of the CRC guarantee to pass and ran a full tank of gas through it, then I filled it up with 92 octane and took it in for the first test.
The NO (PPM) were what failed. At 15mph my measurement was 1181 and 1126 at 25mph.
After failing I replaced the O2 sensor and took it back for a retest. My NO (PPM) is now 856 at 15mph (fail) and 775 at 25mph (passing).
Can anyone offer me any other suggestions to try aside from a new $330 catalytic converter?
Thanks!

tell them you have 4wd and that it came stock that way and to just run it under a civic 4wd wagon and they will have to run it just by reving it and you will win.
California.
All of the converters I see online for like 50 bucks all say "Do not sell to california residents". So apparently they are different in this state?
Where can I order a California type converter at for a good price? Any suggestions?

Seriously if you really need a cat replaced, assuming that you have stock exhaust you should get direct fit cat (correct length of cat and appropriate flanges at both ends), if your exhaust was modified such as no cat, different diameter etc. you may have to buy universal cat and weld it in, or weld flanges on and then mount it. Like I said above - less than 100.00 did it for me, I did pass the smog, and I am also in Cali, just in Humboldt. Start googling prices - Magnaflow is you best bet.
Well I just ordered a magnaflow california acceptable direct fit cat from http://www.performancepeddler.com/ for $144 bucks.
Cheapest price I could fine anywhere. Every place else online wanted $200+
Hope this does the trick for my smog test!
Thanks for your help guys, i"ll post back my results.

Get the $330 one or buy a used OEM one.
Problem with the aftermarket cheap ones is that they typically use junk internals compared to the expensive OEM honeycomb structure. It does not light up like the expensive cat and often fail even though they are working properly.

Aftermarket cat $170.00 installed, Garden Grove CA, but they tried to sell me obdii cat thinking my crx is obdii (HOT ROD SHOP) which I said "just do it..." because it was my last day to renewed. They also chopped both of my flanges. Before I can yell out "DON'T" it's already on the ground. Despite all of that, it passed at the TEST ONLY CENTER, no problem. I'm sure you can get one for around $100.00 in Socal.
I lived in Ventura county. none of my civics have problems passing smog. Got my cats on ebay for about $130. Muffler shops build them direct fit. no welding on ebay. They all pass smog. no problems
