Default Car key question

Friend just bought a civic hatch. Problem is the only key that came with the car works only on the ignition. Does not lock/unlock the doors.. so what can he do about it?

Hoping for a solution that won't cost an arm and a leg.

The key holes look tampered with. Perhaps someone attempted to force it open.

Car is open and can be driven places. We just need to be able to lock/unlock the car with a key. I'll check out that tna auto sales.

if the door locks are effed up then replace them...did he ask where the hell the door keys were when he bought the car? or did he assume that one key worked for everything like it usually does...

I just finished doing this very same thing today actually. When I bought my rex the key lock cylinders were broken and wouldn't turn. I bought some new ones on ebay for cheap and installed them, which by the way is a P.I.T.A., and they didn't really work. They would only allow you to turn the key in the locked or unlocked position, no neutral position. So you couldn't remove the key and unlock the door at the same time. It took me forever to figure out the problem but I finally did today. The problem was that the manufacturer made the replacement piece wrong. You can see in my pics. You will have to either reuse your stock plastic clips or modifiy the new ones to the same diameter as your stock one. All you have to do is pop off the retaining clip and you can remove the plastic clip. These are the exact ones I bought from the same seller.

You might not want to get them lol.

Car was bought at an auction as is. Sold for $500.. a lil beat up and only one key came with it. We will probably have to replace the locks. Is there any way to re-key them to work for the ignition key? Or will he have to simply have two diff keys?

They work great now. The best route I would say is buy the ebay ones and transfer your stock clips. I assume the ones from Honda are at least twice as expensive. Maybe the seller sent me the wrong one on ebay, I would have said something to him but I bought them a long time ago and haven't had a chance to install them till now. So you might get the right ones As far as your other question is concerned you coud match the pins in the lock cylinder to your key that works in the ignition but you would have to file down the locking pins to match them up. Or you could have someone make some for you but I'm thinking that will be very expensive. Or you could just use two keys.

Well I'll call up the auction house tomorrow for him and ask if there is any other key they forgot to give. They key supplied only works for the ignition.. both door locks and the trunk do not work with it. I'm a little pissed on his part. This is becoming quickly a pita.

I would buy either the key kit from honda.. which can be a big PITA. or just buy a matching ignition/door locks that all use the same key and replace all the above... always good to swap the key on it since you bought it from an auction anyway... never know who has the extra keys.

when i bought my 90 si the drivers dooor handle ws effed up..someone tried prying it off the door. so i had to replace the handle and the door lock. the lock was about 42 bucks from honda. autozone did have em for cheaper i think but they had to be ordered. the dealership had em in stock so i just went to honda. worth it i guess..perfect fit.
