How to ID a transmission??
ok, my transmission took a dump last night. i was cruising down the freeway to my apartment, when all of a sudden she popped out of 5th gear. i went to put it back in 5th but she wouldnt go. so i put it in 4th and it went in, but made a bad grinding/winding sound. so i went to 3rd, and limped her home. as soon as i was about 10 minutes from my parents house she started to try to pop out of gear. im talking with a guy that says he is selling a GS-R cable transmission, but i wanna make sure its real before i pick it up. i checked the FAQ's but the link there is busted.
there should be a sticker on the front of the tranny housing. its right next to your block stamp. if its NOT there, i know you can count the number of splines or whatever but im not sure what means what.
oh and if you can get a GSR cable tranny i would do it. those only came on the 92-93 b17's. i would assume that tranny would be hard to come by.

i wish i could take my EK back from my GF but she doesnt feel comfortable driving othe 5speed cars. im borrowing my parents montero (5 speed).
S4C, S80, Y80, Y21, Y1, YS1
which one of these would be for a 92-93 GSR transmission? or are they all for the b17 transmission?

just letting you know, my momma's 93 integra came with a YS1 transmission. no its not a gsr. but many ppl who have one who assume it is.
look at the 92-93 gsr label code. then the 90-93 ls,rs,gs label code. tell me what you see.

looks like im gonna check it out later tonight and if all goes well, $110+PR3 ecu and ill have it. anything i should look for before doing a final purchase?
yea, he said its good. im gonna check it out later today. so hopefully ill be set. how much of a difference will there be in how the gsr tranny feels compared to my old LS tranny? i was planning to get this tranny later on if i didnt go hydro, to slap it on my JDM ITR.
i wouldn't take anybodys word on a tranny especially since so many people are going more rogue than Sarah Palin and turning into scammers whether it be on here or on Craigslist...hopefully you know how to inspect a tranny and go through the gears, inspect bearings ect then you should be good...also i have provided a link to help you out on proper tranny identification...!!!

well, he told me the shift linkage is not on the transmission. so i will have to hit up my buddies house (lives in same city) and snag his extra linkage and run the tranny through all the gears.
so if you put it in fifth gear which you should be able to figure out when you shift it with a screwdriver because youll be able to hear what gear is reverse and then you can keep twisting the shift shaft in the same direction and push or pull it in the opposite direction, you can turn the mainshaft and watch the diff turn. if its a gs-r transmission you should have to turn the mainshaft 3.85 times to get the diff to turn once, if its an ls transmission you should only need to turn the shaft 3.16 times to get the diff to turn once. that should be a big enough difference that you can tell which is which.
hope this helps
i know where the sticker is at, but upon more research i also found that the code YS1 on the transmission refers to both the 92-93 LS transmission as well as a 92-93 GSR transmission. after removing most of the dirt and grime i saw some marker writing that read 114895 and gsr. so im assuming at this point n time that i might actually have a GSR transmission. markings are similar to the ones that a local importer uses on his JDM motors and transmissions. so i guess ill find out when i slap it on my LSV.
i know with my old LS trans i would sit at around 4K when traveling 80mph. so i will go based on that when i drive on it.
