Cold Tranny Fluid
I've posted before about adjusting the throttle to tranny cable on my 97 SE after a new tranny was installed after my wife tried to clear a concrete island and cracked the original tranny housing in half. I used the service manual instructions and adjusted the cables, including the accelerator cable by the book. (tranny end - no slack / accelerator cable - 3/8 to 1/2 slack). Over the years, the accelerator cable developed too much slack, I guess from stretching. Everything operated great until the recent colder temperatures here in Virginia. In the mornings when I first start out of my driveway, the engine is running about 4500 rpm at 25 mph. Once everything warms up, all is fine. I never had this issue when the cables were out of spec but had the other issues of over revving when accelerating out of corners when the tranny was looking for the right gear to downshift to, hence the cable adjustment. I went out this morning and warmed the car up for about 10 minutes and all was fine. To my knowledge, the aftermarket tranny has never had a fluid change, at least in the 2 years it's been in my car. Some of the posts I've read make the 3 to 4 fluid change routine sound like a miracle fix. How much ATF is required per change? I realize that each change only drains a portion of the fluid. Sorry for the long winded story.
rloden,
I believe it's 3 quarts for the transmission fluid change. I think it completely holds like 3.5 but some of the fluid is "stuck" in the torque converter and won't flush easily, which is the reason for doing a drain/refill.

4th gen tranny is about 2.5 quarts for a change, 6 quarts total, your owners manual should tell you the trans capacity. A transmission shop can tap into the cooling lines and change a majority of it in one shot. Otherwise, drain & fill, drive a bit, drain & fill again. That will change about 66% of the fluid. Third change would yield about 80% new fluid.
9 quarts is whats needed for a Honda transmission flush. 3 Drain and fills. Only use genuine Honda ATF for the best results. Drain, fill with 3 quarts, drive, drain, fill with 3 quarts, drive, drain, fill with 3 quarts. Enjoy. When you get the fluid from the dealer make sure and get a new trans drain plug washer and install it after the 3rd drain. I recommend doing a drain and fill every 30k miles.
