This is a dumb question i know, i searched and failed tremendiously and i apologize. My question is what are the visible differences between the d15 and d16? Im on the hunt for an st autocross candidate. Any and all help appriciated

 

well the stamp is a big factor

 

on the front off the block there is a flat square with a code stamped into it. if it doesnt have one i wouldnt even consider buying it bc it could be stolen.

 

Theres a little square with the number stamped into it with the f22 its on the exhaust side idk about the d blocks, and a d15 is 1.5L and a d16 is, **drumroll** you guessed it! 1.6 Liters!!! **huzzah huzzah huzzah** i agree with boarding2008 if it has no plate it could have been cut off also watch out for stuff like a SI with a d15 cuz that means the engine has been swapped and its probably a dodgy job if they put IN a d15 cuz they dont know what theyre talking about. and i believe (dont quote me on this) but i think the d15 is the dpfi not mpfi. idk i get them mixed up

The L3 sticker in on the transmission.
The engine code is stamped into the flat square on the engine.

 

yeah i had trouble finding mine. because it was covered in so much baked on dirt and oil so you might have to do and engine wash

 

Just a more zoomed out shot of the engine stamp to give you an idea where to look.

The engine stamp has the arrow pointing to it, the one that is circled is for the cylinder head.

 

bah all this talk about d blocks makes me want a EF more!!!!!

 

it would be on the front of the block and look something like this. but it will say something like d15b7, d16z6, y7, y8 etc...

 

aaaaaarrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!! MAYBE YOU SHOULD TAKE OFF ALL THAT GUNK OFF THE BLOCK SO YOU CAN SEE THE NUMBERS FIRST...then proceed....its called PRESSURE WASHER!!!

The 16s also have a slightly taller deck

D15 is 207mm
D16 is 212mm

A paint scraper to scrape the square boss on the block near the bell housing as shown in some photos above is all that's needed to read the number. The numbers are quite big and fairly easy to read.

 

just to make sure, honda did put the d16 into some 89 EF si's right?

89 si's have the d16a6 stock,also to tell if it's a d15 or d16 is to drive it,if it's hella slow it's a d15 if it is a little peppy it's a d16

D16A6 was the stock engine in the 88-91 civic and crx si.

d16a1 is a dohc engine from the first gen Integra iirc.

 

At first glance under the hood an obvious feature of a stock D15 is the black DPFI toilet bowl on the intake manifold.

88~91 is the A6 and only found in Si and the sedan EX.
