Default Finishing the Job - Headgasket D15

Anywho, since my other thread seems to be dead.

A new Topic arises.

Alright, well Im about to finish my headgasket job, and there are just a few things I would like to clear up before proceeding.

Im going to have to do the timing from scratch, and this being the first time I do anything, I want to be sure its the right way.

From what I have put together, to time it, one has to:

Align the mark on the oil pump, and the crank gear, put timing belt on with the cam gear pointing up with the two - slight off from the head.

And as for putting the distributor back on, I figure there are only one for two ways to put it on. Where does the rotor have to be pointing?

Lastly, I had to take off the rocker arm assembly to replace the seals that go between the head and the assemly for the spark plugs. Since I took the assembly off, the rocker (I think) was no longer touching the cam. But after you put the assembly back on to spec. do I have to adjust the valves or will the rockers automatically touch the cam and then move the valves in the correct way?

If someone could clear that up it would be great.

MAny thanks,

Matt.

with the crank pulley off, set the mark on the cog to the arrow on the block.
the cam has 3 lines. 2 are supposed to be level with the top of the head, and 1 points at the arrow on the back timing plate.

put the distributor on, and set the timing 1-3-4-2 with the spot where the rotors pointing being 1 (AFTER YOU SET TDC) if it starts but runs funny, or barely at all. your timing might be 180'ed. so just redo the wires, and put 1 where 4 is and go from there.

you should adjust the valves while your under there. you need feeler gauges tho.

ALWAYS PUT THE STRAIGHT SIDE OF THE TIMING BELT ON FIRST! before you set the tensioner, pre tension the straight side, by turning the cam clockwise (if you are facing the cam gear) and that will take care of the belt being 1/2 tooth short.

after the car is running. check the belt with the top cover off to see if it wobbles around. if it wobbles excessivly. turn the cam gear clockwise with everything attached. and it will tighten it up.

just did mine today and everything worked out perfect.

Great, thats pretty much what I was going to do for the head. BUt as for the dist. Im still a bit confused, but I havnt properly looked at a diagram of the dist. and its corresponding ignion timing, yet.

Yes I was told to maybe adjust my valves since Im there, but Im mostly just concerned if they are going to be in the same position before disassembly.

Also when I was putting the rocker assemlby back on my torque wrench didnt have a low enough torque setting. Obviously I did not leave them loose, but would there be any reason to worry if they were too tight, again I didnt tighten them to the max.

And I was reading through the service manual and it says to start with the crank sprocket then the tensioner then water pump, then the cam, is this the method you are referring to?

THanks
Matt.

Alright, everything is back together, I just need to torque the crank pulley bolt, valve cover bolts. and put the thermostat and fan switch back in.

Im just a bit stuck on the distributor...Ive looked through the Civic service manual, but I cant find where it says what wires go where...and also how to take the rotor of if I need to.

Ive made a picture to make it easy to identify where the wires go...

So if someone could match 1,2,3,4 to a,b,c or d would help alot...

Thanks
Matt

There is a set screw. Also, get an inch pound torque wrench and make sure your rocker assy is properly torqued in the proper sequence. Could be disasterous. Imagine if the cam broke and valves smashed into pistons and stuff. Hopefully you didn't over torque it and strip the aluminum. Helicoils are a PITA.

Alright thanks. BUt how do I go about taking it off?

I hope its the last thing, I got everything together, but she didnt start. The rotor is on piston # 4, where 92lxsleeper told me it should be at #1

Thanks
