it was a b.elt issue. thanks guys

Any ideas on what may be causing this to happen?

By screeching..do you mean grinding/scratching sound?? If so it may be a worn 2nd gear synchro assembly....The gear and sleeve may also be worn. If it is more of a high pitched screeching..you may have a worn or damaged needle bearing on 2nd gear..not common but anything is possible! Hope that helps!!
