sorry another noob question...
sorry i'm a noob and i'm just starting to drive a manual car.
At what RPM do u guys get ur car to move from a stop? I usually have to get it to 2500-3000 RPM before it moves but i've seen my friend move his GSR (i'm driving a 00' PY ITR) from a stop at like 1500RPM. So is 3000RPM too high? Am I not letting the clutch out enough or what? please dont flame

From: the internet and I WILL STEP ON YOU
all cars are different, as well as clutches, my car will stall if i try to engage around 1500 to 2k, but other peoples wont, and i used to have to rev to 3k with the 3 puck clutch
You do not need gas(rpm) to move a car, just lift the clutch ever so slow!
). But am i buring/wasting too much clutch if i rev it to 3000 RPM to start?
Try to advoid steep hills while you learn, but if you have no choice do the same as above but hold the e-brake and let it down as you start to move but on the hill increase to 2500 rpm.

let off clutch slowly right? and what do u mean by idle speed? is idle speed the least amount of RPM i must have and any less i will stall the car?

it'll be something that you just get used to after a while.
Start on flat roads, and hold it at 1500, let out the clutch slowly (enough for a smooth start and not spinning the tires every time), as you release it slowly keep it at 1500, after a while you will get the feel of it
just work with it -- at least you know how to drive stick, and that's the hard part

Send me an email. I have a document that I made on how to drive manual tranny.
cycldav@optonline.net
i have only taught two people so far, but they were driving on there own in about 1/2 hour.

its all about the friction point.........put your car in 1st gear.........very slowly let out the clutch and stare at the RPMS.....as soon as the rpms make the slightest move.......memorize how far you have released your clutch peddle...........that is where your clutch is grabbing........now everytime you start in first from a stand still.....release the clutch slowly and gradually applying gas starting near the friction point....one you get practice you will be able to let your clutch up quickly just before the friction point .............stop..........and then slowly add gas and release clutch

one more question how come some times its so hard to shift in to first gear when slowing down?
[Modified by Tiwe, 1:08 AM 9/2/2002]
cause you have to be going like 5 km/h for the synchro to allow you in first ........not even worth it man........never down shift into first when slowing down. It is unneccesary wear on your first gear synchro........i don't even down shift into 2nd gear.......downshift and stay in third when slowing down.....at like 1500 RPMS just shift into neutral and finish the stop with your brakes........new brake pads are way cheaper then a new transmission
this will really prolong the lif og your tranny........also learn how to rev match when downshifting.......definately good for your transmission

When the car has only just started and idling at higher rpms i don't use the accelerator pedal at all, just letting off the clutch gently will make it move.
However when running at normal temp i usually drive with my foot over the accelerator pedal more, so rather than pressing with my toes i press with 60% of my upper foot because the car needs more gas to go than my daily beater. Before this i used to stall and/or ride the clutch like a pony... still do alittle bit
I find the pedals on my ITR to be very very stiff and hard to feather compared to the others i've driven before.
I like my daily beater in that around the driveway/parking/parkinglot you needn't use the gas pedal at all, releasing the clutch gently the car moves and without touching the gas the car keeps moving forward until you go against a hill.

Oh and a big thing, TRY NOT TO THINK ABOUT IT ALL THE TIME.
The thing when I first learned to drive a manual was not stalling and I kept thinking about it and eventually I would freak out and the car would stall. I finally got to the point where I said, F**k it, I'm gonna learn and I'm gonna be good at it. Now I fall asleep if I don't drive a manual.
Just be cool and calm, I know it's stressful when you have other cars around. Even with no gas, if you let the clutch out right at it's "sweet spot," it will roll forward. Practice makes perfect, just stay off of highly busy intersections and keep calm.
Good Luck
