Steering rack removal issues
Ok heres the deal im trying to replace the steering rack on my girls brothers car. Its a 94DB teggy. Is there any possible way to get this thing out without taking the whole sub frame down?
I feel like I have tried it all except that. The rack is completely unbolted from everything. I took out driver axle and intermediate shaft, strut fork, and exhaust system. The hub assembley is out of the way but the rack will not fit thorugh the opening where the outter tie rod comes though. The only thing left to do is take the subframe down. Any other options?
As for the sub frame, I have taken many of them out of junk or wrecked cars but never put one back in. Will it push right back into place and line up or will it take a bit of work?

i might be doing the same task, so i am also interested. so far i heard you can take out steering rack with the engine out without tempering with subframe, but i don't think it's possible to maneuver it out if the engine is in
I replaced a 94 steering rack without taking the subframe out. The transmission was out at the time, so that cleared up some wiggle room, but I don't think that was necessary.
Definitely take the outer tie rods off, either way. You have to move the rack one way to free up the other end, and then it'll come out.

Yea for sure remove the outers, that should prevent you from having to drop the subframe out. Removing them gives you a good 6 inches on either side to wiggle around.
Thanks guys, problem solved. Did not have to take subframe down, just had to take bolts out of the t bracket and push it up a little. That gave it the wiggle room it needed to come out. New rack is in and working fine and new tie rod ends. car goes for allignment tomorrow.
