Default Need help guys please read its about my timing.....

Okay, well i had a leaking head gasket and so i went ahead and started to take the head off [ b17a1 ] and i took the head to machine shop and they told me it was fine not even warp a 2,000ths or whatever he meant....... so i figured it was just wear and tear and that time to replace the head gasket. so i put it back together and i made the mistake and instead off facing cams with the "up" up i had them facing down and i put it in timing so i try to start it and no start so i keep on trying but no luck...... figured timing was off and when i check i had the upside down!!! so i fixed it and now it sounds worst!! don't even sound like a regular crank if sounds more like the block is spinning but like its under water if that makes any sense?? like sluggish start but no start... like its turning over slowly... batt is good i think everything is connecting correctly... where did i go wrong.... I'm getting fuel and spark...... help please.

Your valves most likely hit your pistons. Hondas have interfeirance heads. Read $.

there's good chance that some valves bent, do a compression test then go from there

it's too late. feel bad for you dude. you would have smashed the valve bad with the pistons so far out of time with the cams. don't crank it anymore. just making it worse. cranks slow because the valves are jammed in the guides. they no longer move so the cam lobes are still trying to move the valves down. take it back apart and see how bad it is. if your lucky you'll only need a new head.

It's going to take too long to explain. Sorry dude I just don't have they time right now to explain everything. Basically it's an interference motor. This means when the motor isn't 100% on time mechanically, you run the risk of the pistons hitting the valves. Basically, if your lucky 2 teeth maximium out of time on the timing belt. In your case, your way out of time. So now as the piston is nearing TDC, instead of your valves being closed and out of the way, they are still open and coming in contact with the piston.

When you say things like; sounds like it's under water and cranks slower now even with a good battery. it's NOT a good thing. what your hearing is a combination of many things. piston hitting valves, no compression, cams binding with bent valves, etc.

I will say this one more thing. If your still clinging to hope nothing happened and you have sometime to waste (cuz I know the outcome already) do the following.

-Redo the timing and set it properly (providing you can still turn the motor over)
-Put a 19mm socket and ratchet on the crank and try and turn it. If it binds at all or can't move you have your answer and take it apart.

You may need a new head. Damage from bent valves will obviously ruin the valves, but they do also break at the valve head if bad enough. then each time you crank it, the valve head flies around in the cylinder and damages the head surface and piston. valve guides can also be damaged, so check and replace aswell, etc, etc.

hey bond thanks for your time man. its greatly appreciated. also, you are correct about clinging on hope lol and having time since i was recently laid off from work [economy] and also i put a 19mm socket on it and it still spins with really not that much effort. but kinda feels like at half a turn it gets kinda stiff but then loosens.....

most likely ima take it off again tomorrow and see what i see but first ima do the compression test as stated above and see what i get, will it tell me valves are bent with a compr. test? and as bad as this sounds i did all this at niht which is the reason for cams being upside down.... i had a light but guess it wsnt enough.... i live in aprtment and they trip if they see you working on your vehicle. well thanks again. will keep ya updated.

getting tight and then loosen is the compression of the motor building and then releasing. good sign for you lol. Redo the timing belt and get it back to proper mechanical timing. then compression check it. yes it will tell you if the valves are bent as compression will be low. best of luck

gotta think positive Bond you knoooww lol. its a sign of relief but well see not going to get my hopes up just yet..... pshhh i was just looking for a b16 head! expecting the worst but hoping for the best!

Going to harbor frieght to pick up a cheapo compression tester which is going to tell me if its going to get expensive or it was a close call...........

Thats a grave mistake you made! but its not gonna be a night mare! do like said above and if still no luck take the head off again and check for any bent valves you should tell or if its minor have the shop look it over worse case you got a few bent valves just get new seals and have the valves replaced with a valve job and reinstall it correct at tdc and set the timing you should be good, i have spare oem valves and or fresh gsr heads laying around lmk if your head is in this condition lol it wont be! but ill sell you a fresh head if you need one! pm me gl! http://www.hondamarketplace.com/show....php?t=2671523

It could be your timing was still off a little when you put it back together. If the timing is correctly set now and it hand cranks you might have dodged a bullet. I also feel like I've heard of people being 180 deg. off and no damage. I think the real trouble is if you're off by just a little, and the cams are either pushing the valves into the pistons while they are still at the top of their travel, or that they collide with the valves before they get lifted. If you're at 180 you'll just be pumping backwards but the valves would still clear I think.

To be safe, though, I'd pull the head and check the valves and pistons before you do a compression test, because the last thing you want to do is put more hard revolutions on the engine if you've got busted valves.

update! well sounds soo far like bad news...... i did a compression test and i got: 30, 50, 90, 120........... and it still spins but i dunno... i used a flash light and try to take a peek at the piston through the spark plug hole and it seems like theres no damage...........

i also have a sound clip of it turning over ima upload in a sec. thanks guys for the input. guess next ima take off the head and see if its bad.....
