I just went through chp today for a car that was stolen, recovered, and put back together. They check all the vins on the sheetmetal of the car. not the plastic bumpers. They check the vin on the motor, firewall, and the dash as well. You have to have receipts for everything that needed to be fixed.
If the car is a 2000, you have to get a motor that is either a 2000 or 2001 with a vin number in tact. You would need to show a receipt for the motor and the hood. Not the seats though since there is no vin.
They also check that the srs light comes on for 8 seconds, then turns off when you start the car.
You also will have to get a brake lamp and light inspection.

And another thing..If you don't have receipts for parts: for example, If you bought a taiwan hood and obviously it does not come with a vin number and you do not have a receipt, have the person you bought it from write up a PROPER written receipt and say you bought the part from Craigslist. Proper meaning its dated and signed by both parties. I am not held responsible for anyone doing this in the form of fraud!! But proper written receipts do work at chp. The receipt does not necessarily have to be from a shop.
Beware though because chp might accuse you of lying about the receipts so be sure you have contact numbers from the person you bought the part from, and have your stories straight. Again Im not telling anyone to use this in fraud but it does work.

once they pop the hood and see no vin tag on the tranny...im guessing your busted! chp can be a a**hole sometimes...they either take your car and crush or do something crazy to you???
just like the local cops...or chp says...these dohc vtec engines...when they blow...they are expensive to replace and they are sure that the engines without the vin tag is guarnty stolen engine transmission. it aint worth a try...plus they'll catch you down the road when something is suspiscion to your rice burner!
You cant get popped for not having vin numbers on the motor if your honda is a 1995 or older. They don't come with vin numbers. Just the sticker on the tranny. If its a 96+ and you put a 94 motor in it, your a dumbass and deserve to get your car impounded. If you buy a 96+ motor and it doesn't have vins, and its not a JDM motor, then its stolen. If your motor is straight from Japan and a replacement motor, you need to provide documentation that the motor was bought from overseas or from a Attarco.
