Default Threads Shot on GSR tranny, pay $320 to get fixed?

I own a GSR tranny, its great!!!, but the threads are shot on the tranny where the worm bolts, and front bracket bolts are located. I went out and bought a Time-sert kit to repair them, but my busy schedule does not allow me to perform a DIY, plus I've never done ANY tranny work EVER, and fear doing something wrong when removing the tranny itself.

Well, I found a guy who works at a reputable Transmission shop (the best in town) and the guy quoted me $320 for the work, plus he'll install my TOB at no extra charge, AND he'll take me to work in the morning, and pick me up after the work is done so as not to inconvenience me ( This is why its the best tranny shop around, CS is above and beyond at this place).

Sounds good, but $320 dollars is $320 DOLLARS!!! then again it is cheaper than the alternatives, which would be the purchase of a new LS or GSR or B16 Tranny ($400+ and your not sure what your getting).

Now if I do install the Time-sert kit, then the threads will literally be waaaaay stronger than even a brand new OEM tranny, which is a plus in a way.

Another option I considered was just going to the junkyard, and purchasing the rear section of the bell housing, which is where the mounting points are located for the bolts...

...but I'm not sure that the junkyards here will let me take pieces of the tranny; only the whole.

This situation sucks basically, what do you guys recommend? Any other ideas i haven't listed? any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The TimeSert idea is a good one, and shouldn't take much time or be too hard if you just GO SLOW and BE CAREFUL, but see how much it would be to get the TOB installed. It may be worth it to just go ahead and do that. That place certainly does have amazing customer service if they'll go out of the way for a customer like that.

There are cheap, blown transmissions around. Or find someone to go in on another transmission for parts. And there are tutorials about disassembling transmissions. I know it may not be an option if it's your daily driver.

Buying another transmission may be an alright idea. You could buy a set of new syncros and rebuild it and have a like new tranny for the cost of getting your old one fixed, and have two!

Helicoil is dinosaur technology compared to timesert. Google timesert to see why. Bump

300ish $ is hella cheap for all that work + transportation, id go that way, it isnt like 300$ is alot. i make twice that in one weeks work.

cmon guy stop being cheap ESP with a gsr tranny

ittl cost you 400+ alone for another shop just to take ur damn tranny out, thats without the TOB cost and putting it in then addressing ur actual problem.

...and some people don't make that much. There are 16 year old kids that are into Hondas or people without jobs. The ideal solution isn't always possible. The Timesert idea is sound because it will be very strong, though a helicoil would still work.

lol dont weld the transmission. Its really upto you, if you dont have time to do it, then take it to the shop, but personally I would just make time to do it myself. Taking the transmission out isnt hard, and there are writeups (if you need one) on here.

Integra 4lyfe: thanks for your advice, it was really good (Honestly) but your approach is all wrong lol. Luckily for you i'm not 16 years old and was actually being frugal about it cause times are tough, but i need my tranny to work so i guess $300ish sounds reasonable considering the places reputation and customer service. Sometimes I forget that my time is money .

Thumper: Yea your right, not everyone can just drop cash like that for a rethread and TOB install, no matter how good a deal it may seem. Only reason i went with Timesert was cause i purchased the rethread kit previously, hoping to make the repair a DIY, but between college, work, navy reserves...its hard to find the time , not to mention its my DD.Helicoil is the cheaper, though very sufficient alternative, but i always try to ugrade something that needs fixing (if i can afford to ofcourse ), rather than just restoring it to standard spec. With the timeserts inever have to wory about tranny threads again.

So $320 is good then? Nobody has anymore suggestions? what about an ls rear tranny section from junkyard? will it fit my gsr tranny?

Yup, will fit just fine. And while you have the two apart, swap the LS fifth gear in....and make a write up about it.

Pay the $320 and get it fixed. That is a really good price for that kind of work.

Yea, i just came from junkyard.....they won't sell me just the rear section of a tranny (as i expected), only the entire thing. Will cost me $225. Screw it, i'm getting the guy to do the rethread for me as you all have suggested.

I just bought 6 extra 24mm long timesert inserts...is this overkill? I have five 15mm inserts but figured i should get inserts with more depth.

Here is an image of two spark plugs...one in 24mm the other in 16.8 (just so you could get a feel for how long the inserts i ordered will be).

Did i go overboard lol, i could just tell the tech to use the 15mm inserts instead.

No lol, that's $225 for an LS tranny, and $320 to get my GSR tranny repaired. GSR Tranny is great.... cause I have a B16 and heard anything less than B16/GSR tranny will result in a cow of a car.

Here are the timeserts i'm talking about....

Let's say you were completely tax exempt, it would take working 37.5 hours to make $300 at minimum wage, which is $8/hr. Now, I'm not a priest or affiliated with any organization making me tax exempt...and I am not working full time because I go to school.

Before you rambling on about other peoples' money, take a second to think. It's a totally new concept to you I'm sure, but it's an amazing thing.

B16: Yea...$225 is cheap for an LS tranny...actually, our local Junkyard has a special this month (Call it Black Friday Special or Holiday special or whatever you like lol) where you get everything you can carry in your arms for $75!!! I asked the lady that worked there.." So if I can carry that LS Tranny in my arms, an bring it here to get rung up, I get it for $75 vice $225?" She said YES!!! Unfortunately, they were out of transmissions for all integras...but there is a fresh silver one on the way (she didn't have a solid date) but hopefully they still have the "All you Can Carry" special by they time they do get the integra in.

Thumper: Thanks

min wage in canada is $9.50 cents not eight bucks.

and we base our hours on 40 hours a week. anything after is time and a half.

80% of places u work you get paid lunches and breaks aswell.

even working threw an AGENCY TEMP you get paid no less then ten bucks.

if your working for 8 bucks an hour and thats not with a temp agency thats seriously bad.
and even as a student, your doing something wrong with your life.

i know ppl who is a student and work 2 and 3 part time jobs, and still manage to make things work and still make over 300$ a week.

thanks for coming out though.

your explanation of logic failed......................

and no im not 'bashing' on every1 on ht, im putting my two cents in, and if it seems arrogant to you then im sorry but your feelings r a little to EMO.

The hells up with these Canadians these days???

This thread was trying to justify the repair cost not on how much you can make or do make stay on the subject please.

FYI, this is the stupidest statement I have ever heard and if ppl without jobs own hondas then again theres something wrong here

I was unemployed before and I own a Honda so are you bashing me as well? GTFO man with your dumb comments yo.
