CRX axel making clunking noise?!?!!!!
OK... first topic.
Picked up a 89 Crx si about a week ago for cheap.. talkin 300 bucks
Anyways im 19 and looking to fix it up, long story short previous owner hit a curb bout 35-40 mph and ****ed up the passenger axle (i think?).
Car goes about to 20 mph before it starts to make a noise, like if the tire i loose haven't really got it check and it kinda feels like knocking in the middle (differential?)
Anyways please help me out with any ideas it might be
Will be more specific if needed too..

you probably have more serious issues than an axle.
you need to take the car to a professional or someone with a clue what to look for and who can actually look under and tell what is wrong.

Since I have found help here i will try to pass along the love heh
Diagnosing a clunk
Does it happen when you stop the car going forward and reverse = suspension problem.
Does it happen in every gear or just in one gear = singles out the transmission ... if you say it happens at 30mph in D or 2nd then try a manual selection on your automatic of a different gear or shift to a different gear on your manual.
Does it happen at a specific speed but in all gears... could be a CV Joint in your axle but often when they are bad they make noise throughout the range of speed.
Could be a ball joint or a strut maybe a spring ... if it happens when the car reaches enough speed to lift the front end of the car up a bit due to aerodynamics.
Try to figure out which side and front or back that the sound is located.
put the car on jack stands and visually inspect the suspension... maybe hard because you dont know what it should look like but...
with the tire still on the car and it on a jack stand pull on the wheel and feel for looseness there shouldnt really be any or it could be a wheel bearing. Also spin the wheel and listen for a difference in sound from left to right wheels.
Could be your breaks but probably not ... if it is then it would happen also during stopping and not just driving..
If they hit a curb at 40 in a crx they are lucky they walked away heh
more then likely it is a suspension problem
See if the sound happens in straight and left and right hand turns.
Keep your windows open find a culdasak circle some place quiet ... and go in both directions.
----
If you find it is a strut / spring ... pay someone to do the work ... it is not fun or easy at home.
If you find it is another suspension part you can probably do the work yourself.
If you find it is an Axel then you will need a Impact Wrench and a special Axel Socket you can get at pepboys for under $20 to get it off and do not try to repair the axle just replace it for $60 - 90 a side
If you find that it is the transmission good luck it is not a fun replacement task and requires some actual effort to do.
----
You may also find it is none of the above ...
It could be a lose battery or some other strange thing like a lose intake or a plastic guard making noise when it gets enough wind.
Could be an engine mount. Open the hood and rev the engine while in gear & Foot on break ..the engine will move a lot ... if a mount is bad.
Basically get under it ... look for cracked off paint on suspension parts that indicates a bend in the part ....
pull on the parts and also rock your car by pushing on a fender
again 40mph into anything even on an angle is not too good...
good luck

probably worse than an axle over 40 mph.... probably need a new spindle, lower control arm, rim, maybe some more stuff.... Take pics and post them up to let other people get a better idea of whats wrong to help you
