Default Finally changed my door panel fabric

Sooo.... after over a year of saying I was going to do it, I finally got around to it.

A while back I painted my door panel from tan to black

But then I had this brilliant idea of dieing the fabric on it like i did with my carpet.

That was a bad idea, it looked horrible and felt nasty too.

So I pulled the door panel off, took a vice grip to the plastic welds holding the back of the plastic piece on. Popped the plastic piece out.

I peeled the fabric off and found this

So I took some purple power and a scrubby and scrubbed the glue/adhesive off

I laid out the new fabric and placed the old fabric over it so that I could trace it out.

Cut out the new fabric using the lines I traced

I sprayed down the plastic and the back of the fabric with 3m super 77 (actually I used a cheapo brand) and then pulled the fabric tight over

Wrapped the fabric around and cut little slits for the screws. I used screws in place of the plastic that I broke off.

And finally I put it in the car

Not a bad effort, it looks like he took his time up until then. And he used vinyl. Cloth would've been much easier to deal with.

I did iron the fabric. One of the major issues was that I used vinyl and not cloth which is way harder to stretch.

The other issue was that I didn't use the 3m super 77. The second door panel came out WAY better using that, I gotta go back and do this one over.

post pics of the new results.

and vinyl is fine, you just should heat it as your stretch it over the panel. i used to work at a fabric store, so i know a little bit.

It looks like a decent job but the interior doesn't match.

Good to know. Thanks man. Should I heat it like with a heat gun or will a hot blow dryer work?
