i bought an eg hatch about a year ago. it had hid lights on it when i got it. unknown the type or style. all i know that when i put my headlights on i have about a 17 percent chance of both coming on. sometimes the driver side, sometimes the passenger side, sometimes neither, sometimes one is dim and the other is normal.

any help. im thinking about getting a whole new kit. but if i could just replace one part that would be better. and connections are good.

Majority of the time if the HID is failing like yours it's 2 things.

1. Ground - check it, clean it and reconnect if it still does it then move to step 2
2. The Ballast is bad simple as that

 

My money is going on a bad ballast. You can pick on up from ebay for $20...

 

replace the kit.

 

could it be the actual lights. Or are they working or not with no in between. Different from the ballasts that slowly go bad.

 

Replace the kit with halogen bulbs; you know, the ones meant for your headlight housings.
