Icon6 Tie Rod Bolt Spins!

hi guys...I am having trouble tightening the tie rod nut (crown nut) to the tie rod bolt. It came up halfway using a impact gun, now it just spins with the nut as I tighten it. Any suggestions of trouble shooting this without buying a new one? -Any advice would be much appreciated!

Commonly the tie rod bolt is a tapered stud (which fits the appropriate mating taper on your vehicle). If you hold your tie rod down with enough strength, maybe you can keep it from spinning... it really depends on how badly the nut is secured to the threads.

I had to all-out replace my tie rod due to this issue.

make a small slit on the bottom of the nut, wide enough to fit a flat head screwdriver. now hold a screw driver in it and have someobdy turn the nut with a wrench.

I thought when these sorts of joints started spinning, you were supposed to replace them. Just buy Moog ones, they have a lifetime warranty.

Try squeezing the tie rod to the knuckle with some big channellocks. Zap the nut off with a gun.

what he said^ take a pair of vice grips or a c clamp or something of that sort and squeeze the bolt further into the hole..that's how I dealt with mine.

not enough pressure then. use your jack and jack up on the lower arm that should give you enough pressure to keep it from spinning.

The taper keeps the stud from turning.
If the taper is dirty, it will spin easily.
Clean the stud and the hole it goes into with brake parts cleaner.
Allow time for cleaner to evaporate.
Insert the stud into the hole.
Apply some force to get the taper to 'grab' while you slowly turn the nut with a wrench or preferably a ratchet.
Do not use air, it will only break the taper friction.

my rear lower ball joints were spinning, but after i caught them on a angle with the electrical impact wrench the nuts caught and started turning. you might want to try that, it worked for me..

get a pry bar, and pry down on the top of the tie rod end. then while still prying (pushing down) take your wrench and take the nut off. I've done this many of times it'll work.

I'd use a tap and a die to clean the bolt and nut. Then you can clean it and put never siege on it.

same way i do it, if it doesn't work have one of your heavier friends put some weight on the tie rod while you turn the nut
