Default How tight should my timing belt be?

OK guys, I have a GSR and I'm in the pogress of changing timing belt. I did search already but I just want to make sure my timing belt is too lose. I did follow what helms said, put the timing belt on in order then rotate it 4-6 turn then turn the cam three tooth and so far.....

Well, now I have push in the timing belt about 1/2" (deflecion?) on the exhaust cam to crank, no slack between two cams gear and push in just a little a bit on the intake to crank. I can slide the timing belt off the cam gear. Is it suppose to do that? I thought the timing belt is going to be on there tight tight. Any help would be great, thank you

Btw, everything is dead on no matter how many times i turn it, it just seems the belt is a little bit lose..

If everything is dead on at TDC every time you rotate it, then you should be fine.

there should be some slack but if its sliding off the cam gears that easily then its too loose. did you slide it over the exhaust side of the cam gear first or the intake?

the belt should tension itself if you put it on properly. But lots of people go by you should be able to give the belt a 1/4 twist sideways on its longest length.

i had no problems following what the haynes manual says--tension the belt at TDC, rotate the assembly 3 teeth on the cam gears and retension the belt.

I always do it this way, time it all at tdc with the tensioner bolt loose, then rotate the crank counter clock wise 3 or 4 teeth on the cam then tighten down the tensioner bolt and rotate all the way around clock wise and check to make sure it all lines up, and if you can slip the belt off easily then its probably not tight enough. Hope that all makes sense

I just got everything nice and tight now. I was setting the tension by turning the EXHAUST CAM GEAR, figure out that I need to turn the crank instead. Thanks for the help guys!
