LS = longer gear.. save gas
GSR = shorter gear...
SI = shorter than the GSR

swap an ls 5th gear in your SI...

i have an Si tranny, it works just great on the hiway, whats the problem??

Don't say it's reving too high, vtec engines are designed to higher, there is "nothing" wrong with that and mileage is still good too

Depends on what you're using it for. For N/A, Si is arguably best.

I'm running an Si tranny, and it does run a little high on the highway, but the 5th gear pull at 65 mph rocks. I never have to downshift!

I always thought the si tranny revs a lil for me. But an si trans with ls 5th gear would be great stuff

DONT GET RID OF YOUR SI TRANNY!!!! they are in such high demand and hard to come by. they are by far (if you ask most) the best tranny out there for the b series. they have the exact same gear ratios as a type r except for the final drive. turning a bit of rpm on the freeway is no big deal, just keeps you from speeding too much. just my .02

Get a Type R transmission IMO just add the LS 5th gear if it really bothers you that much.

You were saying??? I also wasnt aware of the Civic Si transmission coming with a LSD? Thanks for clearing that up... dumb ***. Type R shares the B16 1st-3rd and shares the GSR 4th and 5th with its own final drive. If your speaking of the USDM Type R transmission well yeah its the same besides the LSD. So settle your *** down.

If anything, find a Si that needs syncros...then while putting syncros in, put a LS 5th in. I think the GSR has a stronger differential than the SI though. Probably unless you're running an H series, no NA guys are going to bust transmissions like you can with a turbo.

That's some great input towards the tread. The OP is not happy about how high his engine rev's on the hiway because of the low gearing of his stock Si tranny.

You say you like you 4.7 final drive, are you suggesting the OP run worse gearing in his car than he already has for hiway driving??

quit being a hater just because other people have better transmissions lol I absolutly love the JDM ITR gearing with the 4.7 final. I have no complaints on the highway, I still get good gas mileage. And noise wise its not that bad. If it bothered me I would put a LS 5th in rather than the GSR. At 70MPH i'm just under 4000RPM. That sounds high but B series VTEC motors are meant to be revved and they an handle them well. When your car revs to 9k, 4k is nothing. Also on this topic if anyone is thinking about a way to make their car handle better, LSD. The difference is unreal.

You fail to realize the tread topic! I don't hate the jdm ITR tranny, i have one myslef, get off you high horse, i know the difference.

that fact anyone would tell the OP to get a lower geared tranny in place of his Si for hiway driving is just stupid! His existing gearbox is great already and really doesn't need to be swapped out. Like others have mentioned, he could just swap out his 5th gear for an LS one if he so desired.

Unlike what your getting at by spending a wack of money for a whole new jdm itr gearbox, then the 5th gear swap as you mentioned, with a 4.7 final drive, he would be no further ahead in rpms than he now.

noobs think they have all the answers

Good stuff Deetz. i dont really understand how swapping gears work. How would you go upon buying ls 5th gear and swap it out of b16. I have EM1 and plan to do this in the future because 4k to go 70 on the freeway is not that fun.

From my experience where I always had an LS tranny for boosted applications.

Who ever said longer gears is better for boost is crazy because it that is a myth.

On a LS tranny going 85 MPH I was doing 3500rpm on 5th.

Now I have a GSR tranny and I am doing 4500rpm on 5th doing 85mph.

At 75 I am at 4000k, does it burn more gas.....well of cause it does and it's no longer fun to drive long distances like before but hell now it's got better gearing all around and it will keep you close to your power band without dropping too much like the LS would.

What ever you choose, think of what you will be using the vehicle for before you decide. If you use for daily then LS is the way to go or if you have the $$ swap in an LS 5th onto any tranny.
For fun I recommend GSR but for race then the B16/ITR would have to be the one.

JDM ITR is way different, even if you put a LS 5th it will still be short gear ratio cause the final is 4:7. Got someone in West Palm Beach with one if you would like, they are going for around $1200+ tho.
