So my stock D16 is on its last legs, consuming a quart of oil every gas tank. I bought a decent longblock for dirt cheap, and a friend and I are going to replace it on Monday. One thing I am going to do, is check out the timing belt, since the one I have on the current engine is OEM, along with the timing belt and tensioner, all with a little less than 40k on them, so I will just swap those over if the new engine's look slightly sketchy.
What are things that I should look at/might as well replace during this project?

I've contemplated this. The good news, is it still feels great, and despite everything being stock it will allow for a nasty chirp into second gear at like 4k+ rpms. The bad news, is I've owned the car for a little over 60k, so it could have anywhere between 60k and 145k miles on it.

but i wouldnt re-use a timing belt...its like 100$ for a timing belt and water pump from the local parts store. for me i just cant not doing it and worrying all the time bout your timing belt

I'd rather not. I don't know anyone personally who I would trust helping me out to rebuild an engine, and knowing me I'd trash something lol. One possible plan is to do a d-series turbo build, otherwise I'm just going to part out the vtec head since it's still good.

I would never re-use a timing belt. While you have the engine on the stand, I would replace timing belt, tensioner, and water pump. Along with any seals that have signs of seepage. Take your time and do it right now otherwise, you'll regret it later.
i would just go to honda and buy a top and bottom end complete gasket set and do everything the right way all at once. nothing pisses you off more then when you put it in a notice you have a small leak that could have been fixed. also do the clutch. you can get an oem kit for like 100 bucks. do it and be done with it and ready to rock for another 70k. t belt, tentioner, and water pump wouldnt be a bad idea as well. i have NEVER reused a timing belt, not worth it.
^^^x2..i know how that feels..ima do my head gasket this weekend and replacing anything i could think of..including the clutch..do it right the first time set it and forget it!!!
i have rebuilt probably 10 motors in the past year and a half or so and i dont care if it has 100 miles or 100,000 miles on it, i redo all the gaskets. its just murphys law for something to leak if its not replaced at the time of assembly. i have reused clutches though, they are easy to determine good or on the edge. when in doubt, replace.
